Default Theft problem...

I am about to start building a 94 teg that I got real cheap, but considering I want it to be my daily driver, and reading so much about the theft problem lately, I am now having second thoughts. I live about 25 miles outside NYC in CT, and although theft isn't as bad here, it has been getting worse this past year. I have owned a couple of nice cars in the past and almost none of them had alarms on them. In fact I used to leave the targa top off my supra in some places. Never has anyone even attempted to steal my wheels or stereo, let alone the whole car. My buddies type-r was stolen a year or two ago right outside his job and another friends was almost stolen. Last week two tegs were broken into. I'm now feeling like it isn't worth spending all this money and time to build a nice teg.....

I guess I'm just wondering what everyone else sorta feels now. If you were about to start a project car that you know is highly desirable on the black market, would you even bother? I know the car is safe at my house, but I don't want to have to worry about every where I go, will I be riding the bus home.

Also on a sidenote, what can I do about insurance? The present value of my 94 ls teg, isn't very high, but by the time I'm done with it I expect to have a great deal of money invested in it.

Thanks for any comments
BP

Man don't look at the cup as half empty. You're gonna die one day too, but you keep living right?

Build it, keep it lo-profile, wire in fuel pump cutoff, alarm, disconnect power lock switches, etc.

But I dunno- after having a TT supra hmmmmm

Yea the supra was the best car I ever owned. Never gave me a hint of problems and I could beat the sh*t out of it. Not to mention it looked super sweet. I'm actually saving to buy another one in the next year, but for now I felt like getting the honda bug outta my system.

I think I'm still going to build the teg, but I will just have to keep it really low-key. I guess it wouldn't hurt to make friends with all the honda boys in the neighborhood either.....

dont let thieves stop you from what you want to do. just protect yourself and your investment. keep receipts and make sure your insurance company reimburses aftermarket parts.

It is frustrating, but like he says, dont let it stop you from doing what you want.

Get a good alarm, an autolock, pager, fuel cut, ignition kill, backup sirens/airhorns, etc if your real worried about it. A solid bunch of layers of security and a good insurance policy can handle anything short of a tow truck or a real good thief.

this may seem like a good idea.........itz a button you put somewhere underneath your dash and everytime you start your car, you must push it or else the car will stall after three blocks, a thief could never see that coming........also a good way to catch the badguys

Honestly bro, regardless of what kind of car you have, if a skilled theif really wants ur car, he will get it. THat is the reality you have to face.

If you want to mod ur ride, then do it. Don't let the fear of theft intimidate you or discourage you from buildin up ur ride. For me.. i love werkin on my car and its a labor of love. Dats probably why i've been out in my parkin area at 3 in the morning even werkin on my roomates car....

so don't let it bother you bro. if you want to do it, do it. Jus get an alarm and maybe take a few other small precautions like a kill switch. But in all honesty, i think those things are all more for the peace of mind for the owner rather than as an actual theft deterrent. jus my 2 cents.

Yea I am gonna go through with it. I'm picking up a parts car tomorrow and I'm gonna start workin on it soon.

What are some good alarm systems? I've had recommendations of the Alpine systems, but what does everyone else use?

Alpines good, but personally I'd go with Dei products. Check out their website http://www.directed.com. Also give the teg a stock of sleeper look, it deters most thieves away.
