Tech question relating to Rod knock
So I just purchased a 94 GSR with rod knock. I've been pricing out what I need to buy for a full rebuild, but ran into this issue.....I was talking with a mechanic(dunno his experience) he said that i would most likely need to replace the rod because it is probably no longer circular and more like egg/oval like. i have not seen the rod neither has he,so i haven't been able to take it to the machine shop since its the holiday. I'm curious to know if this is true? Do most of you just replace the bearings and turn and polish the crank? is it common practice to replace the rod with rod knock?

like stated its the holidays...machine shop isnt open to get the rod mic'ed and inspected. i was just looking for first hand experience if its common practice just to replace it regardless of the condition
The rod wont necessarily have to be replaced, but most of the time, the problem wont go away entirely until the rod IS replaced. It can sometimes be a matter of a bad bearing due to lack of oil. If you want to be on the safe side, get a new set of rods and stick them in. Used OEM rods are dirt cheap and good insurance against having the proble return IMO
