Default Swapping Question

Hey guys,

I'm going to be attempting to do a swap with the help of a good buddy of mine this weekend. I'm getting a GS-R shell with everything minus the axles and all the engine components and tranny. I will be taking all the engine components and tranny out of my RS and dropping them into the GS-R shell. I was just wondering how long do you think it will take to do this? It's basically un-bolt, pull out and put back in right?

One other question, the exhaust and all that is on the car right now is obviously for the GS-R engine that was in the car, will I have any difficulties with the exhaust being compatible?

Thanks guys!!!

You're asking us how long it will take you? That's a pretty vague question.

It all depends on your mechanical knowledge. What type of things can you do already, mechanic-wise? If you have never done a swap before, it will take you a while. A few days, a week, even more perhaps. It doesn't really matter as long as you're learning. Having a buddy with you is a great idea. Sometimes stupid things like tight bolts just get in the way, and a buddy can be a great help.

It is basically "unbolt, pull out, and put back in." That's not the difficult part. The difficult part(s) are the small things. Tight bolts, things getting in the way, moving the engine, moving/removing parts to get at other parts, etc. The other hard thing is getting the car running. There's always something that prevents the car from being started. That can range anywhere from a missing plug, a bad ground, or something more serious.

My first engine swap took me literally 5 hours. Not bad, but it took me a full month and a half to figure out how to start the damn car and get it running.

Good luck. As you build experience, your speed gets faster.

If I started in the morning I could have it running by lunch, most people need to plan on at least a weekend for their first swap.

installing is the easy part, making the ****** run is a whole different thing. Ive done a few swaps now with some friends, my first being a jdm b18b into a DC and i think total time minus the constant runs to autozone and losing of tools about 3 days which included pulling out the motor, switching the tranny over to the new long block installing and making it run. Not bad since we had NEVER done a motor swap before and this was 2 years ago. Estimated time: If you are efficient and dont misplace tools or anything I'd say this could be done in a weekend.

Yeah, I plan to be at this all weekend .. in the meantime, the rest of this week will be spent removing things such as my cold air intake and whatever else I can remove now to help further the process.

I'll be using mainly air tools, I have a large air compressor available with an air ratchet so I'm hoping that will definitely speed up the process .. other then that, I guess the only way to tell is by doing ..

Kinda worried now about this whole getting it start once I'm done though .. I hope I can get it running, I need a car back on the road asap

Thanks though to everyone! Greatly appreciated!
