Default speed sensor

whats involved in replacing it? hard?
would having the dealer do it be the best bet? they said $220 just for labor to replace it?

I haven't done mine, but I thought it was just a couple screws to mount it into the transmission. $220 sounds kinda high so maybe there's more that they're going to do.

I have the exact same problem with my 98 GS-R...my dealership quoted me the same price for labor 2.5 hours ($220) so I am trying to figure out how to fix it myself. If you pull up the carpet in your hatch near the spare tire, you will see a little orange plug, but I think it has to be mounted underneath the hatch. It looks like a bitch to get to. You might have to take the gas tank off to get to it. The part itself cost me $120! What a rip!

I thought this was about the VSS (vehicle speed sensor), it's on the transmission. Sort of beneath the air intake pipe.

If this is about a wheel-speed sensor (for the ABS) then you've got to take off the brake caliper, rotor, and the sensor is buried down there.

it is. i have no reading on my speedometer, needles arent broken. next logical thing would be the speed sensor. one day my needle started jumping all over the place then just sat at 0.

so its below the intake pipe?

Yeah! I haven't done it, but it sure looks like a one-minute job, including the to celebrate your success!

So 94Gizzer & GS-R Jay got the same estimate for 2 different things... Maybe the shop thought you were talking about the wheel-speed sensor? $220 almost(?) sounds ok for taking off the caliper & rotor to change the wheel sensor.
