I dont think your riding the clutch...Do you push it in till you stop(both clutch and brake), or do you push it in then go to neutral let out the clutch and use the brake to stop.

Anyway I don't know what your noise is.....but I have a noise I bet is similar, do I wanna know the answer too

Its prob not bad to do it close to a stop sign, but when you do it for long distances, like rolling down hills(streets, or the highway), and just let the momentum of the car take you(thats illegal where I am anyway, and more than likely most places in the US(where applicable))

even though I dont think its bad for short distances, its a much better habit to do it right....which is what I said. You never want to leave the clutch in for much time at all. I think wears out the bearings faster.

edit: not sure what those bearings are called....but its not good to leave your clutch in trust me

In my previous post I stated that I am not sure thats a real great idea. Pushing in the clutch, shifting to neutral, releasing the clutch, and then breaking the rest of the distance to the sign, is a much, much better way to do it. It is a really good habit to get into.

I thought I have heard it called the throwout bearing....maybe I am getting confused with something else.

Whenever you have the clutch disengaged (pedal pushed in) the throwout bearing is pressing against the fingers in the middle of the clutch disc. The clutch disc is turning, but the release fork that moves the throwout bearing does not turn, so there will be some wear if you sit there for a long time with the pedal pushed in.

My boss does this on his Z3 (holds clutch disengaged at light). I keep trying to explain to him that it will wear out the bearing a whole lot faster.
