Default So I have this problem...

hey all,

first off im pretty new to all this stuff. i have a 94 gsr and have the weirdest problem. i live up in canada and right now its about -10 degress celcius. my temperature guage will only go up to 1/4 of being completely hot when idling. it will blow out warm air but not completely hot. then when i start driving on the freewaymy temp guage will go completely down. you can literally watch it drop to below cold but its still blowing out warm air. i have checked the antifreeze and pulled out the thermostat. the antifreeze was changed and the thermostat seemed to be opening and closing propely when i dropped it in hot water over the stove. so i put it all back together and its still dropping. im going to put a new thermostat in tomm, but that doesnt make sense as to why its still blowing warm (not completely hot) air and the temp on the dash being cold. maybe the guage is messing up. i dont know. if you have any ideas please let me know cuase i dont want to get raped of my money at the dealership.

This is normal. Your engine temp will be relative to the outside temp.

If its -10C outside, driving your car should cool the engine further because youre pushing more of the -10C air into the front airdam which inturn manages the cooling for the rest of the engine.

The same complaints happen during the summer when the A/C isnt cold enough in 100F or 40C weather. The 4 liter engine can only produce so much power. If you have a v6 or larger displacement engine, heating and cooling would be more stable and not an issue.

no man, that cant be right. my buddies temp doesnt drop when he hits the freeway. iv never heard of a car doing that before. are you saying that to make my car blow hot air and keep the temp guage up i should put cardboard infront of my rad...i dont know about that?

My GSR did something like that and it was a bad thermostat. It looked like it was slightly off center and has scrape marks on one side. I think it was sticking open a bit and the temp was stable on steady cruise but it I accelerated very hard the temp would drop way down. Use a Honda one, the auto parts store one I saw was nothing like the factory one. My car heats up faster, the heater puts out more heat, and it does not drop when accelerating in cold weather now.

yeah i just got back from the auto parts store. i dont think honda is open today. the stock one that is in there now doesnt look like the one i picked up from the parts store. my car has 140+ kms on it. if you saying that worked for you then ill try that. that is the only thing my dad and i can think of.

thanks

He is correct, my temp gauge depending on the weather will vary. If its cold my tempature will be down and if hot will be towards the middle.

I would thoroughly check your cooling system for any clogged hoses and such. If you still have this problem then stuff cardboard in front of the radiator.

my g/f's escort does this. look at it this way, on the freeway, the wind chill temp is probably -50° C or less. That cold air flowing into the radiator & within the engine compartment, it cools that **** off A LOT! and with that the temp sensor is going to read a lower temp. I would say its normal.. I wouldnt worry about it.

well then whats the point of a thermostat you guys...i dont understand your reasoning for when im on the highway and my temp drops. i mean it will drop a very small amount because the thermostat cant adjust to it...but dropping more the 1/4 of the way making it to below cold on the guage just doesnt make sense for me. the thermostat should then adjust and let hotter coolant in....
