Default safe???

my friend jsut got a ecu with 9000 redline. is it safe to take it up to that RPM once in a while??? he has a gs-r b18c1 motor. with about 77k miles on it. but he rebuilt the head aroun 60k. so is it safe for him to take it up there once in a while???

well then stock valve train won't be able to handle 9k rpm and it's not safe. he should upgrade it first

the reason i was wondering is because my other friend takes his gs-r up to that most of the time. he only does it when he races. and his car is still running fine. he hasnt upgraded or anything. his car just has a lot of black smoke coming out when he hits vtec.

Why would he shift at 9K when he races? GSR cams don't make power up that high, and he's on a stock valvetrain.

stock gsr valvetrain is supposedly good up to 9k rpm, but that doesn't mean he's making power there. it could even slow him down.
