It's easier to do the left side axle since you don't have to drain the transmission. You can just remove the axle from the center halfshaft. As for length of time, it depends on how difficult it is to get the lower balljoint separated, to get the axle nut off and get the axle out of the hub, and to get the axle off of the halfshaft. I personally could probably (hopefully) do it an hour or less, but I've done it several times before on my car and other cars (not necessarily changing axles, but also removing transmissions, engines, etc.).

Changing a axle sounds worse than it is it is extremely easy now that I have done it enough times it only takes 15 min once its up on the lift but it is easier to do it with a impact and lift only special tools that I like to use.

i've never had to drain the tranny side...plus i think this side is so much quicker b/c it's so easy to remove the axle from the tranny.

-the driver side i use a crowbar to pry it off the halfshaft....not toooo difficult.

seperating the lower ball joint i use a jack and socket(forgot what size), loosen the castle nut, stick the socket next to the lower ball joint, place the jack under the control arm. jack it up and release it. that should break it loose....
the rest should be obvious...if needed use a BFH to hammer out the axle from the hub, of course loosen the spindle nut and leave it on so the axle does not mushroom.

hope this made sense and helps, it can be done in less than an hour good luck

of all things car related, I hate replacing axles. Ugh.

PITA if you ask me.
