really quick heat shield question.......
hey guys my heat shields are making a REALLY Annoying rattle so I took my car to a good mechanic I know and ask him what he thought about taking the shields off.. he said only take the lower cat shield off, because with the top shield off, it can catch the bottom of the car on fire... anyways I go home and start tinkering around, and take the lower one off, and screw the top one back on, start my car, and the rattle is coming from the top shield....
....is it safe to take the top one off?? any of you guys take it off??
thanks alot!!

mine does the same.. i was thinking about putting some high temp silicon between the heat shield and car.. hopefully that will take care of the rattling..

Just get a couple big hose clamps and clamp the shields together, stops the rattles.

I had an old cat with the head shields removed due to the chatter (sounded cheap and annoying) but the shifter became so hot in the summer. With my new cat and catback installed, i braced it with these metal hose brackets and they work great.
sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.. but where exactly do you clamp it w/ the hose clamps? do you clamp it around the 2 parts by the flange where it meets the B-pipe/mid pipe and the header on the other side? or do you put the clamps around the mid part of the cat/heat shields where its around the cat? do you remember what size clamps it was? 4", 5", 6"?

If I rember correctly, I just put 2 clamps about a a quarter way in on each side over both of the heat shields to brace them together so thet they would stop vibrating. Don't rember which size I used, but if you buy bigger ones and you can always cut the excess off.
well the thing is, when you take just the bottom sheild off, it makes the top one loose causing it to rattle. For it to stop rattling you'll probably have to take both off. But it's not the safest thing so I'd advise you to save up for new shields.

i left the cat shields on .. and the Shield above it .. that has 2 bolts to the under body .. i took off this weekend.... no fire here fellas
GSRboiiiii: if you really want to keep it and make it stop rattling .. you need to spot weld all the bends in the shield .. so it doesnt flex...

I have both of mine off and no problems. When you put a header on you take it off anyway.
dont let a mechanic tell you to get a new catconverter
tie the metal tie wrap around the entire cat. Use three if you need to. My mechanic said there was sand in between the shields but i could swear ive never heard sand rattle. So I moved on to a mechanic who took the time to get under the car rather than just tap on the fender for diagnosis. Now all my work goes to the new guy.
Good luck to you
