Default Question about Syncromesh

Patrick, I think I talked to you about this stuff. Anyways, I am going to go pick some up becuase my third is grinding a little. I will go to a GM Dealer to pick this stuff up. Do I need to get a specific weight? Or are there even different weights of this stuff? I know Honda M/T fluid is equivalent of 30W oil. If there are different weights of the stuff from the dealer, which should I use if I have a slight grind? Thanks guys.

You're out of luck GM doesn't make syncromesh anymore. There are other brands out there that you can pick up at your local parts store. Penzoil is the first that comes to mind.

Damnit! I know Pennzoil makes one, but I think I heard that Mobil 1 makes one as well. If so, I guess I will go for it over Pennzoil. So do you know if there are different weights of this stuff or is it all the same?

There are not different weights of Synchromesh fluid. There's only one type of each variety. If you're lucky, you may be able to find a dealer that has some Friction Modified Synchromesh stashed in a corner somewhere. If you do find some, I highly advise that you buy ALL that they have left.

My buddy used to work at a local Chevy dealer and I bought all of the FM stuff they had left - 6 quarts of it, for about $55. Yes he got me a deal on it. I can't guarantee that you'll find it that cheap, if you find it at all.

And just to be clear, the stuff that Pennzoil and Mobil1 sells is NOT, I repeat, NOT the same stuff as the Friction Modified Synchromesh fluid. Those manufacturers specifically list that it replaces GM's regular Synchromesh fluid, but it is NOT equivalent to the Friction Modified Synchromesh fluid.

I have not yet seen a retail manufacturer that makes a fluid equivalent to the SM FM, probably because GM is phasing it out anyway.
