Problem Sounds
I know this is gonna be really vague, so apologies from the get-go:
Many of the problems that we have with our cars first show their symptoms in sound. I'd appreciate it if people could post what they know about "problem sounds" to listen for in general, and what they may signify, so that problems can be quickly identified.
My 95 gsr sometimes makes a quiet high-pitched whining sound. I can't figure out any pattern to it, either (no time it seems to do it more than others). It's done this since I got the car (November), and I'd like to know what the hell it is!

Loud ticking from the engine bay - bent valves. It happened to me after a mis-shift that spun my car up to roughly 11k RPMS.
If anyone can diagnose this one: my exhaust is really lopey-sounding. I've got Toda A's that would make more noise, but this just started. Sometimes I think I hear ticking, but it's not distinct enough to call it ticking. I also had a friend that knows more check it out, said the car was fine. I think I might just need a tune-up, and that my exhaust/cat may have turned to **** after running really rich, if that's possible.
Edit... whoops, sorry to thread jack.
