Overheating problem
i just got my first car. when i test drive the car i did not notice this problem.
i noticed later that day and the gauge was near hot. so i kept a eye on it. i noticed that in traffic it would go full hot and driving down the road it would go down but not below middle normal-hot. well i drove the car somemore stopping in between to open the hood and let it air down alittle.
i called the dude i bought it from and he said his daughter has been driving it like that and i also found out that the water pump was changed at 90k and a new thermstat awhile ago. when i drive that car after its sat for a good 8 hours, the car within 10 mins is hot.
tomorrow i plan to flush out the rad, install a aftermarket water temp gauge in the stock sensor location, and put all new coolant in it. see what its doing. if its fine then i need a new stock temp gauge (a new gauge cluster) or maybe a loss ground, if not. then i plan to install a new thermstat and see what happens. if not that then the water pump after that you got me
what do you guys think it is? thanks
btw its a 95 Integra SE with the stock B18B1 motor and its got 128,500 miles on it

I would check your cooling system in this order:
1 check your coolant resevoir and radiator levels, if low, refill and bleed the head
then test drive for a few and recheck the levels, if your losing coolant, find the
leak
2 check your fan operation
3 swap in a new OEM thermostat-- I have heard of cheap ones failing very quickly
4 have your radiator flow tested
5 water pump as last item unless it is leaking thru the weep hole or there is no
coolant flow
Note: if your head isn't bleed properly, or your level of coolant is low, your Engine Coolant Temp Switch might not switch the fans on which will overheat the engine ALSO if you have a very small, undetectable leak, that would cause your level of coolant to drop enough to cause the ECTS to not operate the fans or cause overheating because of lack of coolant, good luck and keep us posted

i flushed the rad and put in coolant and water into the system. that seemed to fix the problem but my temp gauge will move to all the way hot every once in awhile, when in traffic, but going down the road it goes down again. i drive it most of the day and it only did it twice that i noted. soo my guess was the guy i bought it off of didn't have enough water in the system.
my fans work and turn on and off. the fans were the first thing i looked at.

It shouldn't move to H at all. I'm surprised you dont have a blowin HG. The OEM stat should fail open and not closed. So I assume you don't have any coolant leaks or smell any coolant? With a 95 you're going to get a lot of small issues within the cooling system if you don't replace the parts in a timely manner. If you think you have solved the overheating problem keep an eye on the coolant level for a couple weeks. If it gets low obviously you have a leak somewhere that needs to be addressed.
well i thought it was fixed but today i was coming back from a friend's and it desided to overheat. so i pulled over and shut it down for 10 mins and then i drove to my gf's house and it was doing the same thing as before.
well later on tonight i was driving from my a friend's and i had the air on and i smelled coolant. i stopped at a stop sign and i seen steam coming out of my hood. i got to my dad's and soon as i stop steam started pouring out of the hood. shut it down and opened the hood. coolant is all over my engine bay and my rad cap is lose it was still on like it should be but it was lose. soo i think my rad cap is bad.
i'm going to flush the rad again tomorrow and put all new coolant in and order a new rad cap and not drive my car. once i install the new cap i'm going to keep a eye on it and see what it does.

It could be that ur radiator is clogged. HOw r u flushing the radiator...with a hose?
Another reason is the HG is bad. Take it to a radiator shop and have them test to see if yhere is exhaust gas in the coolant and pressure test the radiator.

yeah i got a flush kit from autozone with a hose.
i replaced the rad cap and fulled the rad with new coolant and the overflow tank.
well today i went to get gas and it heated up on me within 10 mins. soo i got home and looked and my overflow tank was empty
soo i fulled it up and went to work on my buddies car. it was on like between mid and hot all day. soo tonight i got home and i drove the car about 50-60 miles today. i get home and the tank is empty AGAIN and i hear a bubbling noise from the back of the block i think.
i'm really leaning toward HG right now. what else could it be?

Um, i wouldn't belive some people if i were you, i had no idea my water pump went out but it was going out!, so i changed everything i could. It has a new water pump, timing belt, tensioner, with bolt and spring, and it's all oem from the dealer!, nice and expensive!...lol. But anyways i just got all that **** done like yesterday so i went on a test drive and it runs great it seems!, i still gotta fix my radiator fan but even with it not working it still never gets to the middle, it stays right at the cool mark a little before the middle, which IMO is perfect, for longetivity "my spelling sux".
go get a low temperature thermostat, its around $120.... you'll never over heat with this, i got it installed and my car runs fine, it never goes near mid at all, not matter how high or hard im beatin on my car!
Damn.. yeah check for that milkshake. I hope it's not there. I've been there trying to make it home from a long trip. What a nightmare. In a GM, with the famed intake manifold gasket. Same symptom.
I'm hoping my "HG" makes it to 300k.

yes i do smell coolant from time to time. i'm going to put a tester on it today and see if my headgasket is shoot or whatever could be wrong with it. hopefully i find out by the end of the day. just gotta wait for the old man to get up

Pulling the dip stick may eliminate the head gasket problem. With the ammount of coolant loss, if it were, you could tell by that. You could at least get that out of the way.
anyone got a b18b1 head laying around?
me and my dad worked on my car today. put a pressure tester on the rad and pressure tested the coolant system. no leaks or pressure down when cold. but when hot, it dropped a good bit. pulled the spark plugs and seen if anything was getting into the pistons, nothing. soo we put a thing on the rad and fulled it with coolant and started the engine. at idle no bubbles but when reved it will bubble. soo his word is its either the headgasket on the exhaust side or a crack in the exhaust port. wooo f**kin hoo
soo i leapped the car home (about 16 miles) and the temp gauge didn't move. he said i can drive the car but i have to baby the h*ll out of it and no rev it real fast i have to keep a stendy gas flow and it wouldn't be as bad.
i'll have more info on what it is when we pull the head and get in there.
def wasn't a good day.

you probably have a blown head gasket, i had a civic back in the day and did the same $#!t, couldnt figure it out and it was the head gasket. i had to have the head milled and gasket replace and worked after that, you wouldnt be able to see the coolant leak if it is at the back of the engine, but you can smell it.
