Default Oil

What kind of oil do you guys use to change your cars? And what kind of filters? I am going to actually change my own oil for once, and I don't know what kind to use. I don't even know what kind they use at the place. I have a 99 ls. Any help would be great.

What is the difference between the 5w and 10w? Does it matter which one I use?

5w-30 is a little thinner than 10w-30. I use the 10w-30 because it's so hot here, and when I use 5w-30, it's like water after I drive around for a little bit, while 10-w30 still feels like oil.

How many quarts does the teg take? The Manual says 4, but my dad is saying that the filter takes an extra quart. Please help me quick, I'm about to do it.

Amsoil 5w/30 with the Amsoil/Hastings filter. The best stuff out there, imo.

Don't listen to your dad, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Just fill up your filter before you screw it on, and then put in 4 quarts. The manual should actually say 4.2 quarts when you change the filter, or 4 quarts without a filter change.

Oh, I use Valvoline Max Life 5w-30 with Honda filters

The new Mobile 1 Synthetic is crap -- not enough zinc in its formula

Yup -- but I'm too cheap to put it in my car.

I use 5w30 castrol regular oil

5w and 10w indicate oil thickness COLD. 30 is at operating temperature. so 5w30 and 10w30 make no difference once the engine is at operating temp. however, since most damage occurs on a cold engine, having 5w or 10w oil makes a difference. honda recommends 5w30 in it's cars, so that's what i put (unless it's say a race spec car, so you might want something different, 10w40 or 20w50).

oh and your dad is crazy... 4L includes whatever goes in the oil filter.

if you have an LS, including a filter, it is 4 quarts. for those of you w/ GS-R's, it's 4.2 w/ a filter.
