Default o2 sensor heater

just in advance, i searched and couldn't find anything.. lol

replaced a timing belt recently on my 98 GS and as soon as i fired it up for the first time, it threw a CEL, and i had just reconnected the battery, so the ecu has a fresh reset.

put it into diag mode and gave me a 41 code, being "o2 sensor heater"... i plugged in an obd2 reader and it said "sensor heater circuit malfunction (bank 1, sensor 1)", and code P0135.

is it basically "replace your o2 sensor."? if so, upstream or downstream o2 sensor? and is there any possibility of just cleaning it off like you can an IACV? two completely different things, i know, but gd i'm poor. lol.

current symptoms include, but are not limited to: rough idle(normally on cold start before i drive anywhere, and also when i'm idling after it warms up), HORRENDOUS gas mileage(like 15-20mpg=\ ), significant/noticeable power loss. i also have some weird timing belt sounds that may or may not be relevant, but i'll toss it in for good measure.

i think the timing might be off 180degrees so i'm going to screw w that tomorrow, as well as try to fine-tune the timing to make sure it's on-par.

suggestions? thanks in advance, all.

I would make sure you put on the timing belt right before you do anything else. Sounds kind of wierd that it was fine before but not the second after.

had the same problem, had to replace the primary o2 sensor, "o2 sensor heater" is just one of the 3 or 4 wires that runs off of the o2 sensor that is messed up. get a new o2.

Would the car even run if timing was 180 deg. off?

sorry i haven't been on in a while, been busy as hell lately lol but found out the dizzy won't even go in if it's 180 off. and deducted it has to be the upstream o2 sensor, there's nothing else it could be since tegs don't have egr valves. once i get the money for a new o2 i'll update and let you guys know what's up. thanks for the input
