Alright this is my first time with them. I would like to know everyone person experience with them. What do they do? How much do you gotta pay? What if you fail their inspection? What were your mods??? Where was your inspection located at? I really need everyone feedback that have experience with them before. The pig took a picture of my engine bay. I was wondering am I allow to alter the changes? Like fix the open filter (breather filter at crankcase)??? My mods are aem cai, dc 4-1 header, apexi catback n1 (do i need to put the silencer on?) b&m fpr, b&m fuel pressure gauge, advance timing 18°, magnecor 8.5mm spark plug wires, and apexi vafc. Do I need to remove any of these mods for inspection???? If so, which mods do I need to remove or which mods can I keep?? Keep in mind they took a picture of my whole engine bay so can I be able to remove anything before the inspectionn date??? I'm located in San Diego CA anyone know a close state ref place? Thanks for all great help I really appreciate all feedbacks
they basically pop ur hood and check ur ish. for me they jus matched up my aem intake and dc headers w/ the carb #s they have this in this big a$$ book. Then they smog your car...its bascially an expensive smog check cost me about 50 bucks total for all the documentation and stuff. i'm not sure about the exhaust, but if you can't prove that its legal they might get u for it, so i'd recommend putting your stock exhaust on. just make sure ur car will pass smog and it should be fine.
hmmmmm.... that situation sounds pretty scary, I came close to getting busted a couple times but managed to get away with my good looks. When I first swapped in my B18B motor a couple years back I had to call the DMV and make an appoinment with the ref, you don't have to but it "required" to see the ref whenever you use an engine that was not originally intended for that specific car (however I feel there is no better engine in an EK but a crvtec is besides the point) Anyway my appoinment was set for a few days late. You will drive most likely to a junior college somewhere where he comes out and takes all your info-> then you drive inside and he pulls out a complete schematic of the motor you swapped.
I failed because I was using a civic evap canister instead of an Integra one. I could tell I got a freak smog ref so I made an appoinment to another one. I could tell the guy would be cooler cause he was like 24 and had a set of Regamaster's on his DC2. He passed me on the visual, he also checked all the carb e.o #'s I had. I almost failed because my stupid ICEMAN intake didn't have the corresponding carb#. If you have ANY mods manke sure you have carb stickers for EVERY mod i.e-headers, intake, etc..
Next I went on to the sniffer (almost failed cause my car was too low for the damn chassis dyno
) Anyway did the standard 15 and 25mph test, checked the cat obviously and boom I got my BAR sticker. I suggest setting a couple hours aside and returning it to stock. Just to be on the safe side.....especially your timing, take that fpr off too. (He may not care but it's better to be safe than sorry, you don't want to get labeled as a "gross-polluter" then your really screwed. If you have aintegra swap in a EG then you better have all the smog equipment for that year integra motor. And the motor must be of the same year or newer than the car. Also for everyone ref that will pass your jdm swap there are 10 others who are waiting to body slam your ***. Here is my ref survival guide:
1)Arrive early
2) Leave your car running 10-15 minutes before the ref even comes out(gets the cat nice and hot)
3)Change your plugs, and return everything that does not have a carb sticker back to stock
4)Kiss his ***, and laugh and seem interested in all his stupid jokes...brown nosing is a tried and true art when all else fails.
5)Bring a bill of sale for the motor
6)Do your homework, if you know your legal then defend yourself with proof, refs love to see people who get involved with their madness
7)if one ref is a freak take a drive across town to a different one, some are cooler than others
8)and pray
