NEED HELP !!! windshield how-to
Ok, i just got a crack on my windshield.
Called around and got quoted for around $250 (aftermarket)
Found a used one from junkyard for $60 (oem)
I bet ya'll can guess which route i'm gonna go right?..hehe..yes OEM one
So how do you take the old one out and put a new one in??? From my knowledge, you have to use a heat gun to melt the glue around the windshield so you can lift that thing up. Is my infoz correct?? if not, please correct me.
Another important thing, if i got the old one out, what kinda glue do i use to install the new windshield??? From the old windshield it seems like the glue is some kind of rubber material when it dried. I'm clueless from here, so please help
Any infoz would be helpful, and please post only if you've done this before or definitely know about how to install a windshield. Thanks.

you are right about the heat gun, pull the trim off then the windshield. the glue is called "windo-weld" or anyother similiar brand. you can find this glue at autozone and other such places. also at places like paint shops sometimes carry it. this glue is often refered to as "gorrilla snot" but thats not the actual name of the stuff. when your done, allow two days to fully dry, dont slam doors and dont drive with windows down for two days. give it about 6-8 hours before you drive it when you get the new one in.
Windshield installers usually gouge out the old glue with a little metal hook. They drag it around the outside of the glass and scratch up the metal. Sometimes the old windshield breaks, in fact there's a good chance it will break. You can use a steel wire and feed it through the edge of the glue and have 2 ppl work it like a saw, one person inside the car and one outside. This will cut through all the glue and help free the glass.
Never heard of a heat gun being used, I don't see how youd keep it hot enough all the way around. I don't doubt it could be done though. Body shop supply stores sell windshield adhesive, it's like tar that comes in a tube that's used in a caulking gun.
Whoa, fast responses. I knew HT is a good place for answers
Thanks alot guys.
Anyone else might have other inputs? Thanks in advance.

Ive done 3 and i never bothered heating it, i just used piano wire, scraped the old stuff out made sure the window was clean put the windoweld on and be done... is more simple than you can imagine...
any hard metal wire or twine will do. connect it to two wrenches and tie it off.. go back and fourth with a buddy on the rubber trim and basically cut it up. take it to a pro to have the new one installed tho. its not something you wanna do yourself. its not expensive.

on the same note, what if you wanted to replace with lexan, is there a way to home depot it DIY-style, then just pay for the install? like have it cut as close to spec as possible, and hit the local glass shop to finish the deal
