misshift, engine gone?
integra ls on stock valvetrain.
basically i was redlining third on the freeway (around 80 with no other cars, and not street racing) and went to grab fourth, but because my shifter is so damn rubbery, i hit the little plate in between gears and it slid into second gear.
the rpms skyrocketed to around 10000 and i quickly slipped it back into neutral and then fifth gear and basically went easy on it until i got home.
now it clanks like a diesel engine, which im guessing is the valvetrain. i havent checked it out yet but during the drive home, it didnt really feel like it lost power at all. it sounded somewhat like a subaru boxer engine.
really unfortunate since i was looking to sell it soon.
so, what should i look for? im expecting the worse and hoping it wont need a new motor. pictures down the page.

I'd say do a compression check first and the most common outcome from mishifting is mostly bent valves, or cam gears skipping a tooth. Do u hear loud ticking noises?

What he said and also, you could have a spun rod bearing. You won't know until you take it apart. But I do know spun rod bearings cause a loud knocking noise. Check your oil for metallic metal shavings. If you have em, you spun a rod bearing. If not, it's most likely your valves.

okay, i asked my neighbor who is a mechanic for help and we took off the valve cover. we did not find any metal shavings in the oil.
every rocker was very loose and a few were missing nuts which ive highlighted in red. we found 3 that just completely came off and right now 2 are missing. he also said that he didnt think there was any valve damage.
here is the valve cover, it needs a new rubber strip.
thoughts?

I meant the oil in your oil pan, check the dip stick closely. I'm not sure about those nuts you lost though, they most likely fell into you valve train area which is not good.
those nuts are too wide to bother the valvetrain...I wouldnt worry about that...Theyd basically just bounce around in there...Ive had those nuts back off in my engine due to not tightening them properly..
just an update, i finally got around to fixing it today.
all i did was put a nut on every rocker, bought a $4.99 metric feeler gauge and adjusted the valve lash to spec.
next, i got some ultra black gasket sealant and put the stock valve cover gasket back on.
its now sounds and runs excellent.

duly noted, although i thought the rubbery feeling had to do with the linkage?

ive had a sloppy shifter for almost 2 years now when in 3rd gear you can move over to 1st and 5th easily im kinda used to it now.
i still dont understand some of these mis shift posts. like 3rd to 4th is straight down... u really need to pull to the left to slip into 2nd

the tach was pretty much pointed straight down which i assume is around 10k.
yes i know 3rd to 4th is straight down shift, but mine has this really rubbery feeling like you never know where the next gear is. 5th and reverse sometimes take a few tries to get into.
