ls/vtec question
many people have told me that when you build an ls/vtec it has to be rebuilt every 5,000-10,000 miles.. what does this mean? does anyone have ls/vtec that can share their experience with it...i wanna build one soon so help would be appreciated
no, you dont have to rebuild every 5-10k. If built right it can last like any other motor. I have a couple friends and they had their motor for over 3 years and 70k plus miles, still running strong.
I had around 30,000 miles on my LS/VTEC when I sold it, and I never had any problems. Still had 240psi across all 4 cylinders. No leaks at all either.
I did keep clean, synthetic oil in it at all times and changed the spark plugs every 15k miles, among other maintenance jobs.

Ah, a questions about a much-debated topic. I have over 7k miles on my Ls/Vtec built motor and it's running as strong as the first day I drove it home. Just make sure it's built right: by an experienced professional and using the right parts. It can be as reliable as any other setup granted it's built correctly (use Search to find tons of info on quality products for building this kind of setup) and as long as you don't revv the **** out of it. People will argue Ls/Vtec rev limits and real reliability for years, but you just have to do it yourself to find out. Rebuilding a motor every 5k-10k miles is rediculous unless you're beating on it constantly or it's a full race application. Just don't be afraid to try something against the grain.
PS http://www.importreview.com has a great little section on how to build an Ls/Vtec the right way. It's worth checking out. Good Luck.
