Little Big Problem
Hi there, I have a 98 GS-R and last week was rolling on the highway and got a checkengine .. I posted about it before... Code 71: Missfire in Cylender 1...
At the bottom of the thread you can see what the sparkplug in that cylinder (wich was only 3 months old - as the wires) looked like.
So anyways, I changed the wires also (wich had green-blue corrosion on it) for brand new ones and a brand new sparkplug: I get perfect fire, but still a "lazy" cylinder...
I know 2 things: I have a chunk of broken sparkplug in my cylinder and the problem isn't fire-related.
In the previous days/weeks I could hear valves "claking" tak-tak-tak ... so I think I might have busted one a a few .. could it be the impact of such a malfunction that could have damaged the sparkplug? I hope the sparkplug's state will help me diagnose the problem...
Any pointers?
PS: Some people told me it could also have been my timing belt that skipped, but.. wouldn't this have affected all cylinders exept of only the first one?
Thanks for your time.

im getting the samething except with cylinder #4 (CEL 74). All my plugs checked out fine and theres really no sign of misfire except for the CEL. And when i was obd1 i never got the CEL. Only when i went back to stock and started using my obd2 ecu it throws the cel. But when using then obd1 ecu it doesnt.
How is your car running? Check your distributor yet?

Are you losing any power from this? Is it causing your car to drive differently?
That 'clak clak clak' noise is most likely valve ticking. It can usually be resolved by getting a valve adjustment. I have a EJ1 and my brother has a DA9 when we bought our cars, they both made that noise, actually almost every Honda I've ever looked at the engine has made a similar noise.
Try getting a valve adjustment, that should fix the problem. I don't think your timing belt could've skipped. Take it to a mechanic and have him look at the problem.

Yes major loss of power, I'm actually rolling on 3 cylinders I think.
Could itn be that some valves are no longer functionning therefore the piston is restricted from doing it's cycle?

That spark plug pictured about sorta looks like it has been fouled from oil. That could be from worn valve guides, seals, or piston rings.
Can you do a compression test to see what condition that cylinder is in?

You ECU has a stored code, there is a way to clear this, just cant remember off the top of my head. It is someting about pulling a fuse from the main box clears it. Even if it has been off the batter for a while it will still store a code.

First thing you need to get that chunk of a spark plug out. I would guess set that cyclinder to TDC, use some really long needle nost and grab it, use a magent...anything. If it has not allready melted into a pile it will cause more damage in the long run. This could also be some of the tik tik tik. But as stated above i would do a valve adjustment. Also while you have the valve cover off it gives you the chance to check to make sur the timing belt did not skip a tooth.

if the valve is bent it will run like crap, do you think you are getting anything to fire? or is in fireing at all??
If you run the car, and pull the plug is it dry, or soaked with gas?

Yes, the connectors on the wires (plugging into distributor -- not sparkplug) were all corroded, and the sparkplug was all dirty before I removed it as you can see (dirty may be relative)
and I replaced the sparkplug + wire and get excellent fire. But nothing soaked with gas AFAIK...
