what would cause the timing to change? what started this was me driving it and then someone tried racing me so i down shifted and hit the gas. after slowing down it started making the noise and loss of acceleration and power. would that still cause the timing to be off?

maybe a bent valve...i know downshifting is fun and all but sometimes it isn't worth it.

I am willing to bet that there are missing teeth in your timing belt...or more than one bent valves.

Either bent valve, a piece broke off an exhaust valve, timing belt jumped a tooth or a couple teeth, or you are missing teeth on the timing belt.

compression test first. if you find a low cylinder, leakdown test.
if all cylinders are low, check timing

not necessarily, as a compression test will tell you 2 things at once: possible bent valve(s), or possible skipped timing

whats the compression? b20's tend to crack sleeves when abused.

Lets stereotype^^ I love when members assume that B20's sleeves aren't as strong as other VTEC/Non- VTEC blocks, yet people make amazing power on stock sleeves. What ecu are you running on this setup? Do you have an actual tune?

which block? b? or z?
what i mean is, were they the p3f pistons? or phk? is there a knock sensor on the back of the block?
regardless, compression test will guide you on your next step towards diagnosing the issue

Oh let me guess, you have NO experience but a friend of a friend of a neighbors cousins built a B20V, beat the **** out of it and it blew up. Thus, leaving a bad taste in your mouth, through no real experience... am I close? Regardless, you have no idea what you're talking about. I built a B20V in which I had a great experience, made good power and didnt crack a sleeve.

As for the question at hand: check timing first and foremost. Also, spill the beans on your setup. We need to know as much as possible to really help you out.

At least I am not the only one in this thread that knows what they are talking about . And to the OP; check your mechanical timing as Cpt stated, you may find a couple of surprises.
