Default Intake Question

There was an option online for a bypass valve or soemthing... what does that do and is it worth the 40 dollers they charge you for it?

bypass valve is for cold air intake, it doesn't work until the intake has been submerged in the water. Don't waste your money or risk your engine, just stick with your short ram

it also lowers your hard earned hp

the bypass valve is something that u install in the cai piping so that in case your filter gets submerged in water say if u drive thru a massive puddle or sumthing.. then the air will be drawn in thru the bypass valve area, but you have to cut the piping in order to make the bypass valve fit go in, and the bypass valve still leaks some air in from the hot engine bay supposedly. Thats why peopel say it robs hp.

It comes down to this... would you rather pay 40 for that and install it for the peace of mind of not drownin ur motor into hydrolock or are you confident enough that you won't submerge ur filter and just leave it off. Depends how much u drive in rain and how much rain.

I'm on motor number two bec of hydrolock. I'll send you a bypass valve that should have gone on my car if you want.

TegLover, I'm up here in Seattle too and I'd definately say get one. Especially for the winter time, I've come across puddles around town that could have cost me another engine if I hydrolocked in them. The CAI may not net you quite as much as with the bypass valve versus without one, but I still don't think it's worth the life of your engine. Get one.

Do you think if you do a careful job cutting & installing, then maybe it wouldn't leak?

i agree w/ loveless........my experiences with both I prefer the shortram. The sound of a shortram sounds better at higher rpms..i think at least and the diff in power is very minimal. I mean we're talking 1-2 hp if even that. It really all depends on the rest of your mods. to my mind, a cai setup is a complete waste of $$ so dont even stress the bypass valve and keep the shorty

I don't mean to ***** this post, but I was going to post something similar anyways........

Which do you all feel is better.........Cold Air or Short Ram? Why? I have heard that CAI is the way to go, but some of you are saying Short Ram. I am new to the scene and don't really know what to believe. Obviously the Short Ram is much cheaper, but does that mean anything? Also, I live (and drive almost exclusively) in Wisconsin. I am not worried to much about the rain, but we do get a lot of snow. Will that be a problem for the CAI? Even with the bypass? I am a little worried about hydrolock, should I be? Thanks a lot for the input.

hydrolock isnt really something you should worry too much about unless you have a habit of driving directly through puddles after it rains... a cai might give you 1-2 extra hp's over a shortram depending on the rest of your setup. Like i wrote in an earlier thread..ive used them both...both are aem but i prefer the shortram. the shortram is louder as you move up through the rpm range...there really wasnt a noticeable diff in power gains between the two..i just like the sound of the shortram better. many will disagree with me, but thats just my opinion. i never bothered with the bypass valve on the cai... not worth the $40 to me and restricts airflow. if you want an opinion..go with the shortram...easier to install, cheaper, and not noticabley diff in power than the cai..just my thoughts

The main reason it robs power is because of the disruption of flow, inhalation of air through bypass or more importantly turbulence.
