Default HID Question

I just bought an HID kit from my friend (generic brand) and tried installing by plugging it in to the original light socket. Doesn't work. On the box it says I need to connect some sort of relay onto the battery then tap into the light socket. Does anyone know if there are kits out there that are not plug and play? Are Philips the only ones that are?

does it have 3 wires? it probably wants a 12v, ground and trigger like some of the old hid systems

Yeah, it does require a 12V source, probably why I have to tap into the battery. The wires are cumbersome, I would definitely avoid this kit and get the plug and play ones.
