help! ripped a boot! cv?
hello today i was cleaning the engine bay and i looked almost directly under the intake and i noticed a lot of sludge-oil. i removed the intake and started cleaning it off and then i noticed that i ripped a boot. which boot is this (cv or ball joint or something else?) what do i need to replace? just the boot, the whole axle or what? how much will the parts cost me (i have help and can do the labor myself). will it be ok to drive in the mean time? thanks for all the help and info you can give me.
Umm...lets see...to answer your questions in order:
1. You just need to replace the boot itself, not the whole axle.
2. I believe that a boot is only like 12-15 bucks at your local auto parts store.
3. It is ALMOST okay to drive in the meantime, but don't do a lot of it. If the CV joint loses enough grease, it may begin to fail. If this happens, you will have to at least replace that one joint, and maybe have to replace the whole axle.
The boot replacing process is not hard, and if you have a manual, you should be able to do it with no problem. One thing though is that you may have to drop that axle. If you have not done this before, it might take a little while. If you need instructions on how to do this, go to http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto.html
Good luck!
