check your fuel pressure.. if vtec does not engage, check your oil.. vtec is oil controlled... do you have, or can you get ahold of a friends ecu to try to rule out the possibility of your's being bad?

When did it happen and what were you doing when it happened?

if it breaks up real bad in the high rpms, you might be running out of fuel because of a clogged pump, filter, or pump is going bye bye.... maybe?

ooo yeah... what mods, if any, do you have?

Free reving? You mean reving in neutral? Like the other guy said VTEC is oil dependent and to me that sounds like your issue to me. I dont think you said but have you checked your oil to make sure you have enough? Also are you throwing any CEL when it bogs and backfires??

do you have the plugs behind the intake manifold plugged correctly? the MAP and TPS are often plugged into the wrong plugs because they look the same.

VTEC will not operate unless the car is moving a minumum speed. So free revving the car will not operate VTEC.

i think he means it will rev over 6k fine without breaking up free reving,(not hiting vtec) then when he is driving it breaks up over 6k and wont go into vtec???

I know. My point was that he wasn't comparing apples to apples. If he want to free rev with VTEC, depress the clutch at 30 MPH and free rev. I really thjink he needs to check the oil level etc. OP, are there any CELs?

I agree this sounds like an oil related problem.

but what about oil pressure? check your oil pressure by hooking up a gauge to it... it really sounds like your oil not being strong enough to engage when the vtec solenoid says to... and you may be breaking up in the high rpms, because of a lack or vtec and fuel.... check fuel pressure and oil pressure

The screen on the VTEC solenoid can clog and block oil flow.

check the screen on your cylanoid. and dont forget your VTEC Plug, that little green cylander looking plug attachment. Check that out.. take one off of your buddies.. and try using his and see if it hits, I've seen/heard of those going bad. and also... does your check engine light come on when the car starts to miss?

The pressure switch would throw a CEL on a USDM ECU.

CEL = check engine light. See the Integra forum FAQ.

usually a CEL that is there, but doesnt throw a code is a random misfire... they usually do not show up as codes, just as a CEL...
