Aftermarket HID setup is gonna be your cheapest route, I would buy new as there is no way to verify the condition of a used set up or how much life is left.
As for the effect your goin for
a 4300k HID setup would be the ideal situation as that is the color that most closely resembles natural daylight so they light the road the best. It is a really white light with a tint of yellow to it in non hid JDM headlights
6000k is a solid blue colored hid
8000k is a purplish color
As for the advertised 10,000, & 12,000k I have not actually seen a set no do I want to
The if you goin to turn heads get 6000 or higher depending on preference, if you getting them for maximum visibility (bad weather, night time highspeed driving)get the 4300 or 4100k setup.

As a side note remeber that the JDM headlights are aimed at oncomming traffic instead of off to the side of the road, you will get high beamed a lot if you are not careful aiming. Check out my garage as my reference...

dude you live in cali, hit a junkyard and slip the guy a few Ben Franklins for a factory HID pair of ballasts and bulbs, someone had to wreck a car with some by now
then go to hidforum and read up so you dont shell out $$$ to get them installed
I bought factory TSX hid's and they're GREAT

actually i just found out my step dad has a SL 500 mercedes hid light(only 1) any idea what came in those and any idea where i can find another one? do u guys think i could make that work?
Probably philips or osram 4300k.. You really should buy 2 at the same time with the same wear on them since hid bulbs color shift over time and the color won't match between an older and newer bulb.
