the system CAN be checked without a gauge, here's how: by applying fused 12 volts to the VTEC solenoid, with the engine running at idle, a change in the
engine operating sound can be heard if the solenoid is functioning properly. To check for switch operation, monitor the voltage going through the pressure switch while energizing and de-energizing the solenoid. If the system is functioning properly, you will see 12 volts in one postion (energized or de-energized) at the switch, and 0 volts in the other position.
Your solenoid could be bad.
