if you are moving at all then put it in reverse it will grind because the reverse gears are straight edge and all other gears are angled. In other words it is pretty normal and I wouldnt worry about it.

Also if you put the car in 1st and then go to Reverse it syncronizes the gears and it usually won't grind. 1st and reverse on most cars use the same syncronizers

Not to thread jack but does anyone else have a hard *** time putting it into reverse? I shift to first then reverse but its still hard *** hell. Sometimes i have to force it into gear. Does anyone else have to do this?

My 91 DA does this too. I bought a new clutch and ever since then it barely does it. but going into first then into reverse will usually make it not grind,

i had a problem where i couldnt go into first when i started my car up tho
but new clutch fixed it all

normal, you need to let it go into neutral, release clutch and go into reverse, the tranny is designed so you dont go into reverse while in any other gears. most likely you would need to change your fluid, wrong fluid or bad fluid will giv eyou a hard time putting it into gear, the synchro's wouldnt be able to slide with the dog teeth, and if you just force it, and it grinds a lot, your just wearing down your dog teeth. but normaly your tranny makes slight noises when puting it to reverse, just make sure your at a full stop

no it is not normal for a car to make a grinding noise going into any gears . on the DA integra they do have straight cut reverse gears which makes the r/c car sound while reversing ( not engaging the reverse gear) . if your car is making the grinding sound your throw-out bearing is bad . This too is a problem with the DA integra

A throw out bearing will NOT make a grinding sound when putting the car into gear. It'll make a completely different sound if the throwout bearing is bad.

If you still have your Integra manual, read it. The manual says you're supposed to put it into 4th and then into reverse to make it easier to go into reverse

a throw- out bearing helps bridge the gap between the release lever and the pressure plate , over time the bearing wears down and the gap slowly increases with every shift and every depress of the clutch pedal . NO grinding noise is ever normal , the grinding is not the bearing but the transmission not being able to align itself . And the throw out bearing is the cause of this .

Never said it was normal, just said that a bad throw out bearing will not cause the problem he's having. I think everybody knows the sound of a transmission grinding gears.

it is the cause look at the mileage of his car i doubt he ever replaced his clutch . i have replaced ppl's clutches for this very reason . if your throw - out bearing goes out i guarantee you wont be able to shift gears .

You'll hear your throw out bearing. It makes a pretty specific and distinct sound. And how can I look at the mileage of his car if he never mentioned it? Regardless, he's asking a SPECIFIC question ONLY about reverse. Its not a "problem", thats just the way it works. As I mentioned above, read your DA owners manual and it specifically talks about this situation and how to avoid the grinding sound

B-series, K-series, and H-series (probably F-series) transmissions all have synchronized reverse gears.

If it grinds consistently and chronically, then the synchro may be nearing the end of its service life. You'll either have to come to a more complete stop before putting it in reverse, or replace the synchro ring or 5-R synchro set.

A straight cut gear has nothing to do with grinding or not grinding. It's not a constant mesh interaction, so the teeth on the mainshaft and the teeth on the reverse gear can hit, and grind against each other if one is moving at a different speed. Or, the reverse gear teeth can hit the bottom of the teeth on the mainshaft and keep the gears from meshing.

i got my car with this problem and while in reverse and moving it makes a grinding noise....
a mechanic said it's probably missing a tooth which makes me worry if there's a tooth somewhere in my tranny?

Every car I have owned has been this way. Always put in 1st gear before reverse and then it slides in. If they don't have the same synchro's then something else works cause I don't ever grind reverse.

BTW, 5th gear and reverse have the same synchro.
1st gear and 2nd gear have the same synchro.
