I only use 93 in my gs-r, on the gauge face it says premium unleaded only. I'd go with 91+.

I always use the highest octane possible, but I run the giggle juice. For N/A mid grade gas should be alright.

How many miles are on the motor?

Significant carbon build-up can increase the compression ratio and cause pinging. Altho, it's mostly something you read about in the Click & Clack column of the Sunday paper in reference to old cars in combination with shady gas stations.

Since the non-VTEC motors don't have a knock sensor, there's no way for it to compensate.

very true. My friends talon had mad ammounts of carbon deposits on his pistons. He was running like 10:1 compression. I would never use anything below 91 octane.

if it sounds like it's pinging, check the timing, the b18b engine w/ regular gas shouldn't ping, unless timing is off....just a thought

Do you still have warranty? Have the dealer check it out...
