A final drive is the ring gear on the differential.
In short, the higher the number the final drive /4.4/4.7/5.1...the quicker the acceleration but the loss in top end.
So lets say you put in a 4.7 final drive into your transmission and you can accelerate much quicker, but you loose out on top end from going 220km/h to 170km/h max

so LS final is 4.266 and gsr is 4.400 ... from what your saying a ls tranny is better then a gsr tranny... no... you've got something backwards... type r tranny has a final of 4.785

All USDM ITRs have a 4.40:1 final drive. Only the 98-01 JDM ITRs had the 4.785:1 final drive.

Not that I'm complaining too much. I love my GSR, just wish it got better mileage.
