A final drive is the ring gear on the differential.
In short, the higher the number the final drive /4.4/4.7/5.1...the quicker the acceleration but the loss in top end.

So lets say you put in a 4.7 final drive into your transmission and you can accelerate much quicker, but you loose out on top end from going 220km/h to 170km/h max

so LS final is 4.266 and gsr is 4.400 ... from what your saying a ls tranny is better then a gsr tranny... no... you've got something backwards... type r tranny has a final of 4.785

All USDM ITRs have a 4.40:1 final drive. Only the 98-01 JDM ITRs had the 4.785:1 final drive.

better depends on the person. A higher final drive will give faster acceleration, but also make your RPM alot higher when cruising on the highway.

And the joy of cruising on the freeway at 4,200 rpm...

Not that I'm complaining too much. I love my GSR, just wish it got better mileage.
