Engine Vibration
Hey all... I'm a noobie here, but I'll try posting anyways. I just bought a 97 GS-R sedan, switching from my '97 RS coupe. THe car rocks comparatively, and the B18C1 is way smoother for the most part. My question to you guys is that there is a really odd engine vibration at almost exactly 3300 rpms. It's probably about 50 rpms wide or so, and it's like a switch disappearing on either side of it. I was thinking maybe exhaust reverberation or something, but that would be really weird, especially with a bone-stock system. There are no mods to the engine whatsoever. It also occurs in every gear, at any speed, including just revving the engine standing still. Has anyone else experienced this with the 'C1? Any ideas what it could be? Also, I don't notice much of a power increase where VTEC is supposed to engage (5200, right?). Is there usually a noticable pull when the rocker arms switch to the secondary lobes in a stock engine? Never having ridden in a VTEC honda before, I don't really know what to expect. Thanks to anyone that reads this long mess of a post....

If you put some breather mods on your gsr you'll be able to tell when you hit vtec much easier.
As for the rattling...heat shields are a common problem on integras. If it happens at a set rpm everytime you go in and out of that rpm, then it is in fact your heat shield. There's quite a few of them around the car, chances are one of them just needs to be tightened.

nate, not sure what smoother means..
if you can clarify where you are feeling the vibrations, we might deduce the cause. Is it through the shifter, or all throughout the car? does it appear towards the rear or front? etc...

Wow, thanks for the fast reply guys...
I'm certain it's not a heat shield, I've actually checked them. (sorry, should have stated that earlier) There was a lose one on my RS, so I knew to look for that. It's more than just a rattling, more like a deeper vibration that you can actually feel inside the car. It's not enough that you can hear/feel it over the stereo when it's up loud, though, to give an idea of the level. I'm thinking it'll require a ride to a dealership maybe? It doesn't sound like it's detrimental to the engine, just doesn't sound right.

Oh yeah... by smoother I mean less engine vibrations at high rpms. I have read that the Crankshaft on the 'C1 is fully balanced while the 'B1 does not have balanced journals (is that the right term?) Or maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to love the nicer car... hehe
THere is definitely a lot less engine noise driving than with the RS, so that contributes a little to my "smoother" description I guess. (Like I said, nooooobie... feel free to poke fun...

For some reason I don't think a stock gs-r should be quieter than a stock RS...

agreed. your RS was probably not maintained very well.
my B18B engine revs smoother and runs cleaner than when i first bought the car. Ive driven a dozen B18C's and IMHO, i cant say smoother revs are the distinctions between the two.

I guess you just have to drive them both one after the other. I have both in my possession (actually, trying to sell the RS [see http://integra.xthat.com] but I read that they don't want classifieds on here) and I drive them both currently, so I guess I'm especially sensitive to the minor differences in the cars. Or call me crazy. The car has actually been maintained quite well. The only potential problem with maintenance is that since the last owner at 54k miles I haven't adjusted the valves. Eh. This is all IMHO anyways... take it for a grain of salt. I think I have like one post left for my first day on here...
Hi, I just bought a gsr a few days ago, and my car does the same thing. It's kind of like a medium tone vibration. I think it's nothing that will hurt the engine, but it's getting really annoying when I'm driving.
