Engine Mods without taking away reliability
What can you do to a motor without dropping reliability. *wants speedy daily driver*
I would like to stay non vtec. But i could go with better pistons. Ive heard the LS rods are good. Also replacing the cams.
Need some mechanical input

Revving higher than stock redline is going to accelerate wear, so that rules out all but the mildest cams. With mild cams there's not a lot to be gained from higher CR pistons... maybe a few hp tops... but it's going to cost $$ to tear down the engine to install them. Plus you'll have to run premium gas.
What I'm getting at is anything beyond simple bolt ons (I/TB/H/E) is probably going to comprimise some reliability... but so does driving hard in general. Honda had to make a lot of comprimises to make their cars as reliable, quiet, efficient, etc as possible... when you do an engine mod you are essentially undoing their hard work to gain some power.
All of this IMO, of course.

On a stock ls I would guess around 10-20hp... not much over that. It's tough to guess though as every car is different.
Here's a dyno from a similar set up... http://b16a.com/dynocenter/92B18A_darren_n.html
There more ls dynos there too... http://b16a.com/dynocenter/home.html

it ultimately is decided by what you choose.
and it isn't as easy as saying, well I want the most HP gained, when something might gain you 30hp, but it will be when you car only makes 40hp, and then it actually makes less hp higher up where it will matter.
you have to find what suits your driving conditions. if you want something that will be better drivability for daily purposes, I will recomend something that will give better midrange performance.
good luck, also, try doing a search on the topic, chances are you will find a wealth of information on the subject.
