Default Engine Knocking....leaking coolant

before anyone chews me out on this, i did a search...but all it says 'check for leaks, might need a new radiator'. im tryna get a more definte answer...

ok, so ive had this car for 2 weeks...no problem except for the brakes. then last night after i picked up my man, we smelled something really sweet, we knew it was coolant. so we looked and a lilttle leaked out. we also notice my engine was knocking. it was kinda dark...so i jus put a rag under the leak and then we went to bed. i wake up this morning to find the rag soaked, and coolant all over my garage floor. so i start her up...no leaks while shes running, doesnt over heat, but she idles funny. so when i turn her off she knocks again. it might either be a blown head gasket, or i might need a new radiator. can someone claify this more for me???

check your oil to see if there is a milky substance ( headgasket failure) might want to do a pressure test on the radiator.

You really need to look at your car. Find the leak so we can help you from there.

Guess he didn't peep your signature...I would advise that you trace down the source of the leak. Without knowing where it is actually leaking from, it will be somewhat tougher to find the problem. If it's coming from a hose, try to pinpoint which one (not too many) it is. From the sounds of it though...you have a bad head gasket. Have someone stand behind your car and see if the exhaust has a sweet smell or is very white. If the engine is knocking, it may be from coolant spilling into the cylinder and the engine trying to compress it...water doesn't compress, so your rings will give up first. If your knocking, you may want to do a tear down after you figure out what the problem is...knocking will destroy your rings, pistons and sleeves. How severe is the knock? Occasional or often? Also is it in multiple cylinders? Got to stop banging VTEC so much!!!

Oh $hit....LOL

I didn't even notice that

My bet is the head gasket with a possible rod knock.

k...i tracked the leak down, but still not 100%. more like...80%. if her lookin at the car (as if you were standing in front of my avatar) thhe leak is comin from the left side...(passenger side). its comin from the radiator...towards the bottom left. the knocking, i didnt notice it until last night. i heard it this morning but it was really short and wasnt as loud as last night. (but then again, i didnt drive my car so it didnt get as warm vs driving to the airport last night)

EDIT: NVM the question. the leak is comin from the TOP of the radiator. nothin to do with that bump...no more knocking, no smoke (never was)

Get a new radiator...may as well splurge and get a Fluidyne, Koyo, or even C&R. They are AWESOME. Keeps the car cool as ****. Hope everything works out for you.

if its like, kinda shaking, then theres a leak somewhere in the hose. i had the problem on the upper line.

had a small hole and the car was shaking preety bad.

replaced the hose, and no more shaking.

dont know why, but yeah, it worked.

Have the leak delt with then go from there. Have you noticed the temp gauge over the half way point at all?

yesterday i didnt notice that if my car was over heating or not because i didnt drive it and i never let it warm up. so i took it to autozone, and yes...it did pass the 1/2 way mark, it went all the way up to 'H'. so on my way to autozone, i had to park on the side and let it cool off a little. i forgot what it was called, but an EX fix for the radiator, it looks like liquid gun powder and its suppossed to seal any cracks from the inside. so i let my car cool down, put it in, and topped off with coolant. no more leaks...no more over heating. but thats just a quick fix, im not relying on it for too long. i need a new radiator.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! That EZ fix **** is the devil. I tried it on an emergency radiator rupturing (why I know have a Fluidyne), and it clogged up some of the coolant passages (small ones) on my old motor a little. I have heard of this stuff doing this to other vehicles too. When you replace your radiator, you should FLUSH THE **** OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM. It can be a hinderance and nuisance later. Good luck, and I hope all turns out well for you.

Yeah, that **** sucks. Like he said, replace your radiator, flush your motor and see what happens. If that knock comes back or if it overheats again you may have a headgasket/head warpage issue.
