Ever since I bought the car it has had this problem of backfiring every now and when im sitting at a light or just idleing somewhere you can here it start to run bad and you can see flames shooting out the back. I have replaced the plugs and wires, checked cam timing, ignition timing and cleaned out the Egr valve.
What could be making my motor run like this, i am out of ideas.
please help
thanks, cody

you're getting some sort of misfire for whatever reason. your exhaust is loading full of fuel then igniting it off.
start simple, visual everything out for anything obvious. loose harness, check all fluids, check air filter, check pcv vent tube. sometimes you can run into some really simple things and end up fixing your problem.
you're in the right direction with checking ignition. make sure to check that cap and rotor too. check the ignitor connection. pinch the spade connectors on the ignitor tighter and apply di-electric grease.
check for other simple things, like slight vacuum leaks. vacuum here would make since because its an off load/engine idle situation. do a vacuum gauge reading, and make sure its around 18-20"hg. spray the intake side down with ether and listen for a change in idle.
then do the normal checks... compression, leak down.
does it backfire when you let off at higher rpm?
it could be an injector issue, but unlikely. check injectors first by ohming out. this is a pass or fail test... no half assed. then you can check by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and an injector test box (snap on tools master fuel injection kit) hit the injector on and watch pressure drop. do this for all four and compare the numbers. just like a compression test.
hopefully that helps

thanks that helps alot, it does really backfire when im at higher rpms, but it kind stutters.
sometimes it idles and runs fine but other times its just a pain in the ***. very intermitten
you know what the resistance value is for the injectors??
