Default Differences between headers

First off, I'm new to honda-tech. Seems to be a huge knowledgeable community.
My question is what are the differences between headers? I'm not talking brands, my question is with the collectors. I’ve seen people talking about different diameter and different lengths. I have a 95 gsr. What diameter header bolts up to the factory cat? It the type r different than a jdm type r? Will either work with my factory exhaust? Starting to look into getting a header and am just trying to figure out what I should be looking for.
Thanks,
Mike

usdm is like 2 inch collector (not really sure)
jdm collector is 2.5 inch though.

I'm not talking brands, my question is with the collectors. I’ve seen people talking about different diameter and different lengths. I have a 95 gsr. </TD></TR></TABLE>the 2 common header designs are 4-1 and 4-2-1. The first has 4 of the primaries merge into 1 pipe near the collector. The 4-2-1 has the 4 primaries merge into 2 primaries and then into 1. In theory, the 4-1 will help with the upper end of your RPM's while the 4-2-1 whill help the lower end. The collector is the end that bolts onto the cat. Stock 95 gsr collector size is approximately 1.9". In fact, most usdm stock collectors are roughly around 1.8"-2.0". JDM integra type r's (aka itr's) have 2.5" collectors. Larger diameter collector means greater flow (more flow is better to an extent).
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">What diameter header bolts up to the factory cat?</TD></TR></TABLE>Aftermarket header collectors usually come in either 2" or 2.5". A 2" header will bolt up up to the stock cat. A 2.5" header will require a larger cat.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">It the type r different than a jdm type r?</TD></TR></TABLE>Yes, the USDM header has about a 0.5" smaller diameter on the collector.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Will either work with my factory exhaust?</TD></TR></TABLE>The USDM itr will work with your stock cat and exhaust. The JDM itr can be used with a new cat, but keep in mind that a bottleneck would be created since the diameter of the stock GSR piping is much smaller (2") than the header. You wouldn't be getting the maximum benefit of having a 2.5" header if you're going to use the stock GSR exhaust.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Starting to look into getting a header and am just trying to figure out what I should be looking for.</TD></TR></TABLE>do some searching on the comptech 4-2-1, the jdm itr 4-1, jdm dc sports 4-1, they're in the mid price range. There are plenty of high price range and lower price range headers too if you'd like to know more.
btw, check out this guide, its very informative!

so a stock usdm itr header would be a direct bolt on to a 95 gsr cat?

yes, it fits, but the length of the header may be off by a couple inches itr header, so the exhaust would be pushed back or short a tad.
i know for certain that 94-99 gsr's have identical exhaust systems (longer b-pipe, ~13" cat) whereas 00-01 gsr's, 97-01 itr's, and 94-01 non vtec tegs share exhaust dimensions (shorter b-pipe, ~17" cat). the a-pipes are slightly different between both different set-ups, but i can't be for certain which one is longer. regardless, bolting a usdm header on a 95 gsr wouldn't be very beneficial, its not that much different- well, not different enought to provide any significant gains.
