Default cv boot replacement?

Well I just fixed my clutch problem since the pedal was going to the middle of the floor and had to bleed it out. While i had the car on the lift i decided to check for anything unusual since I have been hearing these "clunk" like sounds every now and then when turning or driving on a straight road. I first noticed my bushings were "ok" not too worn so that led me to checking the shocks. They too were in good shape so I check the cv boots next. I noticed my right and left inner boot had a little grease on the outside, not too bad but they seemed to be able to move a little. My question is could that clunk be from the axles going bad? I dont know how long it has been leaking but I couldnt find any cracks or anything and there wasnt any major grease coming out either. Would a replacement boot kit be alright or should I just go with an entirely new halfshaft since the axle will have to come out anyway?? Any suggestions thanks

if it makes noise when you make turns, then replace the whole shaft. If it is just leaking, replace the boots.

whats confusing is that its only on occasion, sometimes not even on turns but when I go to park my car, after turning the wheel youll hear a clunk so I cant decide where that is coming from. How long does it usually take to fix the boot? I heard getting everything out and putting it back is a ****

I'm sorry I re-read your initial post, it's your CV shaft. It'll start with it being intermitent then gradually it get worse. Shaft replacement are fairly easy, you can have each shaft out in 10 minutes or less if you know what you're doing. It's the boot replacement that is a ****. You have to separate the outer joint from the shaft to install both boots, then measure the shaft length, and adjust the length by allowing or depleting the air in the innner joint to the manual specifications.
