Default Cut Spring question

Hey guys,

I've got a 95 Teggy LS, its at stock height and it's killin me.

I know cut springs are not ideal what soever, and i know the risks, and that they will blow struts etc. etc.. But I am wanting to do it just temperarily.

If anybody else has cut springs on their teg, How many coils did you cut, and can you please post pics?

Thanks

Cons: Not so comfortable ride, rough, bouncy, and still will handle like ****.

Pros: None besides very cheap.

Should you do it: NO.

Best advice: Save up for a decent spring/shock combo or basic coilovers.

Can be good or bad tbh. Friend did it on his coupe and it rode like moon shoes, and in turn we did it to a teg and it rode better with the cut springs/looked better than with D2s and it never blew a strut in 2 years of hard driving.

While cutting isnt optimal, if you do do it, make sure you cut them all damn near exact.

Seen the horrors once with a friend that thought 1 coil ment one inch lowering on his 240 . When he lowered it his frame said " Oh hai driveway" ... So just make sure you do it right even if its the "wrong" way

Not a good idea at all. My friend just got a 00' Accord and cut his springs and I did look good but he just had to replace both front shocks and replace both front spindles because all of his studs broke off.

you guys talking about blowing shocks with cut springs? whats the difference if I lower my car on some ebay springs or cut them? I still got stock shock.

btw OP i had some ebey adjustable springs and it was real stiff and hard. Then I took a gsr rear spring and installed it in the front and it rode pretty decent. No need to cut nothing since rear spring is shorter than front.

the biggest problem people have with this is cutting too much then bitching. cut no more than two coils and 1ish would be better. you can get down to a loose two finger gap with stock springs and not suffer major ride/handling issues.

use a die grinder and cut off wheel, make sure you hands aren't near the spring when it pops if you do it on the car.

the #1 reason people talk about cut springs and blown shocks is they cut the spring too damn low and killed their suspension travel.

Cut springs will reduce the life span of the stock shocks. Since new shocks will pretty much be needed soon anyway, why not just buy a set of Koni Sports and use the lower circlip? Stock springs, no cutting, lower ride height, much better handling than stock shocks, a complete win with minimal costs.

Cut springs are best left in the past when easy solutions to lower a car weren't readily available, or if you happen to have an oddball car that doesn't have any aftermarket support.

Considering what gas, brakes, tires, and insurance costs these days, if you can't afford new shocks for a 15 year old car, then you really shouldn't be trying to modify it anyway...

Besides, the car will need an alignment once the height is changed, no matter how it is changed. There is no way to lower it for free, might as well do it (one of the many ways to do it) right.

I'd rather have cut springs.

Cut springs won't really reduce the life of stock shocks any more than lowering springs. Lowering springs are lower and usually a higher rate. The stock shocks are pretty good...as long as you're not bottoming them out all the time, they can take a ton of abuse. My stock EM1 shocks lasted 150k miles total. 10k with Eibach Pro kit springs and then Ground controls on them for 30k of those miles. They're still good. I just wanted Konis.

Koni yellows are a great idea...but they are $450 and they lower the car by around 1'' with stock springs. It looks/rides GREAT. My EM1 has that setup currently since it's my GFs car now. Rides so much better than stock.

However, it's a waste of $450 to just lower the car 1'' using Koni yellows...which would be more adept to higher spring rates and motorsports activities. It's like using the world's most expensive hammer to kill a fly. Overkill. I put those shocks on the car with Ground Controls originally...but my GF just needed a normal *** car to drive around.

Anyway....Skunk2 lowering springs are like $125-150 on ebay. That's dirt cheap. So are Tein S techs. Both will get you an acceptable ride at a very low cost.

just a funny thing. I had eibach sportlines lowering springs on tokico whites. In the front it sat past the fender(i thought sportlines should not sit that low) and it felt like it bottomed out so this it what I did. Sits a bit higher and is a bit more stiffer.

have had it for 3k miles.

OP if I wanted my car to sit one inch lower and I wouldn't have the cash to do it, I would go ahead and cut the springs. NO I would not dump the car but lower it a bit. aint going to hurt the shocks at all. I've been lowered past the fender for over 2.5 years running lowering springs on stock shocks. My buddy did same thing to both his gsr's using eibach sportlines. Shocks never blew.

Obviously who did it to those are surely dumb. Almost look like they were heated. I've had cut springs on my front end for two years. Never had an issue.

before i could afford anything decent i had a set of the adjustable ebay lowering springs on my old eg... tell you the truth i cant tell much of a difference compared to my skunk2 pro s coilovers on my da now...

if you dont have the money to spend id go with the ebay adjustables, for sure, that way you dont have to worry about cutting them unequal or wrong, and youll be able to decide how low you want. theyre like 40 bucks, definitely worth it considering the hassle and disappointment youll probably have if you cut them.

well, posting pictures of cut springs would be a start

what you have is a heated spring. basically a guy gets a torch, doesn't add that much oxygen, just enough so it won't cut the metal. heats the spring and jacks up the control arm.

the bottom springs might be cut but whoever did it cut them so short that failure was all but certain
