Default Which coolant to use.

I am quite convince on Honda's statement regarding silicates containing coolant on how it is not good for water pumps and radiators, but the Honda cooolant costs like $18. The only cheaper alternative that I know is SIERRA, does not contain phosphates, or silicates for that matter. But is this stuff effective? Anyone tried it?
Anyone know of any engine coolant not containing silicates?
What coolant do you use?

Thanks guys.

Spend around 18 grand on a car....and DONT spend the extra 8 bucks on the good coolant.....OKAY! that makes sense!
I could spend $5 more on Weed Be Gone, I've been using something that costs a lot less and works fine. Why would I spend more?

If I or someone, can fully justify the premium cost of Honda Coolant, I will pay the extra $8, (sorry, I am not a millionaire like you, so $8 is $8). Can you tell me for sure why Honda coolant is worth the extra $8?.

Just found it. Prestone Orange.

I am "not cheaping" out on the maintenance, I just don't like to spend more money if I don't need to.

And one more thing...Ethylene Glycol is ethylene glycol. You can talk to it, reengineer it to death, or redesigned it to death, it will still be ethylene glycol and Brand X cannot possibly have a better ethylene glycol than Brand Y unless they did some unimaginable impossible way of making the bonds stronger without altering its molecular structure, etc.

Meaning, I am just looking for an ethylene glycol coolant NOT containing silicates.

Just about any phosphate/silicate -free coolant will work fine. I believe that most (if not all) "Dexcool compatible" coolants meet this criteria. Personally, I've been using the orange Prestone. It's phosphate-free, not too pricey, and performs well. Coolant manufacturers used to make a bigger deal out of being "phosphate-free", but now, sometimes you have to read the fine print.

Thanks. I agree with you that as long it does not contain phosphates or silicates, the coolant will work fine. I found Texaco extended life to also not contain them. Thanks for the intelligent post.

I'm afraid you can't order from A&H unless you pick up from them. They won't ship coolant, I tried last week to order some but they said no. Plus they were charging 13 a bottle, I dunno where you got 10

I think my 94 LS has the green stuff too. Never bothered to look since I got the car 6 months ago. I should be using the Orange "Dexcool" stuff right?

I think that one contain silicates that is suppose to scrub out and clean build up but the stuff builds up on your water pump. The thing to use would be OEM honda coolant, Prestone Extended Life, Peak Extended life and Texaco, which contains no phosphates nor silicates.

I don't why Honda is so **** about it. I also have a Nissan Altima and the manual states coolant that is ethylene glycol based and THATS IT. Same thing with oil filter, ATF fluid, etc. They are not **** about using Nissan fluids.

I also, I am wondering at some people here. They always defend the manual as like a "bible" and do what Honda tells them to as far as maintenance. Yet, why not change oil every 3750 or 7500 miles like it says?
