Default Compression test?

What should the compression be on a 1996 GSR i am lookin at one that has 175 all around is that good??

If it is consistant across all four, 175 like you said, I would see that as a good engine. Remember the compression number may sound low compared to your friend a state away using a Snap On compression checker. Why? Not all the gauges come with the same size nipple to go into the spark plug hole.

Also, for a more thurough diagnostic, I would recommend a leakdown test. It will give you a much more detailed analysis of whats going on inside an engine in terms of how well it's sealing up. I would definitely do a leakdown test before buying a new car.

leakdown is not necessary unless the compression numbers are way off in each cylinder (like 10% off). Depending on the calibration of the tester, sounds good. When I had a GSR, I got 230psi in all 4...I thought maybe it's not too accurate, but it showed me that each cylinder was pumping out about the same amount of air..
