Cold start rattle?
Does anyone have a video of how a normal 94 ls Integra sounds. This morning it had sort of a rod bearing going bad rattle that quieted up after a few seconds and I don't hear it as higher RPMs. Is this normal for the B18 motors? How do they usually sound?
I just bought this one it has 200k on it. Never had any 4 cylinders before only 6cyl.

Possible that it is piston slap in the cylinders. Usually rod knocks don't clear up as the motor warms up or is revved up. Where as the pistons warm up they tighten in the bore. Have seen several that have lasted years with it. I guess it depends on how the car is driven.
Haven't found anything loose. How bad is piston slap? Is that like a new piston ring or hone to fix it? The PO said it was just to drive to work mostly highway which is what I'm planning to to do 1 hour drive one way.
The car is in pretty good condition overall. PO said regular oil changes but didn't do a timing belt and they had in more than 6-7 years so I've got the parts for that ordered and I'm going to do it before I start driving it regularly. I've got plugs, wires, filters, fluids on the list also. The ABS light is on but I'm going to get a code for it after I get it registered and tagged.
I looked up some youtube videos for valve taps/ pistons slapping it sounds similar to mine. People were commenting that its the lifters that need to be tightened and its a factory thing that happens after 180k which makes sense for this car is at 200k? What are lifters? Also is adjusting the valves the same as the lashing? I think I can handle a valve adjustment I'd rather not have to take the head off.

To fix, yes it means tearing the motor down. Without seeing the car in person, tough to tell you how bad your case is. I have owned some with it that lasted me 50,000 miles before I sold it. Then it still made it across the country, before he decided to get drunk and wreck it.
Yes valve lash adjustment and valve adjustment is the same thing, easy to do with basic tools and knowledge.
Your engine is a 1.8L DOHC, [double over head cams, being the operative words] there are no lifters, [or push rods], it is valve stem to cam lobe, with an end pivot bolt and tappet adjusting screw to adjust valve lash.
There is no need to remove the head, just remove the valve cover to do the valve lash adjustment, do a timing belt at the same time, get a VC gasket kit, one that comes with the spark plug well O rings. 94

Wouldn't valves continue to make noise when revved up cold? That is what lead me to think more in the lines of piston slap. Both would quiet down when warmed up. But, most valves that I have heard when cold just make more noise revved. And he stated that it disappears when brought off idle.

from what he's described, sounds more like piston slap to me. however, no ones heard anything yet. and it's certainly not a call that i'd make over the internet since, as mentioned, it would require a complete teardown to remedy. as mentioned as well, could be as simple as a loose heatshield or something loose for all we know
