Default Cat??

Ok my GSR has the same 3k to 3500k rattle mentioned in many threads before. I have gotten some pebbles out of the heat sheild but still the same rattle. I took my car to the local Midas to have it looked at. They told me that my cat was going out and it was 300 to get it fixed does this sound right??

If you're getting the evo2 and your cat is going bad, you might as well get a high-flow one from SMSP. It'll be about the same price as what Midas is charging you.

There was a thread about the header being the cause of some of those rattles @3500 rpms a while ago.

Also try removing the heatshields altogether.

i didn't know that there was a difference in cats. when i bought my 90 ls it had an egay 20 cat on it, i swapped for a catco high flow and noticed absolutely no difference. not saying that this is typical, but i don't think i'd waste 300 bucks on something i could spend 20 on and get the same results, kind of like the intake theory, $=power wrong.

That's because that $20 cat was a test pipe and not a catalytic converter. A test pipe is about the same performance as a high flow cat, but it makes your car sound and smell like ***.

A visual inspection isn't exactly hard to pass. A high-flow cat shouldn't pass inspection. A tri-y header shouldn't pass a visual inspection.

For $20, I guarantee you it was not a real catalytic converter. At best it was a resonated test pipe. But if you're so sure, find me a new catalytic converter for anywhere close to $20 on ebay.

That is very much not a catalytic converter. It's also $50.
If the seller's info is misleading, you shouldn't pass it on as fact.
