Default brake light switch question..

My brake lights aren't working so I checked the fuse/bulbs - all fine. I'm looking at the brake switch and I'm not exactly sure what i'm checking for, it seems to be moving in and out when I hit the brake but what exactly do you check to see if it's working ok?

Then push the switch or the brake pedal to see if the switch works.

right, but it seems almost impossible to be able to get all the way under there and be able to reach up to it.. I guess I'm going to bring it to a shop, I really can't get to it.

ok screw the shop, estimates of 200-250 from each place.

I was messing around with what I think is the brake light switch and my friend was watching the brakes, they did flash on, does this mean it just needs to be adjusted? I was twisting the locknut and it seemed impossibly tight to get off. Also, does anyone have a good picture of the actual brake switch in the car? I have a manual and the picture is complete garbage, I can't really tell exactly what I'm doing.

another thing, which way is the locknut on the switch suppose to be turned? is it a reverse one or something? I'm turning it as hard as possible in the normal way and it won't loosen.

Mine hasn't screwed up. I know where it is & how it works, but I haven't had to dig around & actually take mine out. I think there's also a switch down there for cancelling the cruise control - you got the right one?

yeah, I'm positive I have the right one, have the diagram right in front of me.. I think it must've been tightened when the master cylinder was changed or something, it's absolutely impossible to loosen with a wrench..
