Default Bad shocks?

Is there anyway to check if a shock is bad when it's off the car? I just bought some used Koni's and want to make sure they're in good condition.

What I do is push the shaft all the way in - it should give a steady resistance all the way down. Then I let go and watch the shaft come back up. It should come up slowly. I listen for strange leaking sounds and look for leaking oil. If it leaks, make noises, or springs up immediately, then there is probably something wrong with it. By the way, a very soft liquid friction whooshing sound is normal.
