Default b20 vtec question

i got a b20 vtec long block. i am planning to put it on my g2, and using the stock ys1 tranny. the tranny has bout 170k on it and theres a slight grind on 3rd. what u guys think? what i wanted was to put a b16 cable, but i can't afford it at the time. so would the difference be that big?

also the motor is not out the car yet and the timing belt needs to be changed? which belt would i use? b20? or the head (b16)? im guessin it would be whatevers on the block, but i want to make sure.

I think that you will be ok using the ys1 tranny. But being that its well used and apparently having some issues, Id plan on getting it replaced when you can afford one. As for the timing belt, yes Id think that youd want to use a b20 one.

if the tranny had a small grind then try using Synchromesh Fluid in it. Sometimes that stuff works wonders.

As for the timing belt it comes down to the water pump you are going to use. if you are using the b20 pump then the b20 belt and the other way around

Go ahead and replace the tranny while the motor is out. Yes it cost $$, and yes you may have to save some $$, but the hassle later on will make you regret not doing it know.

Even if you replace the tranny yourself later you'l have to drop the tranny with the motor in the car, and frankly I'd rather do it outside of the engine bay.

B16 trannies can be found for cheap, just look around.

wow thanks for all the help everyone. now its time to find out what water pump it is, i might as well change that while im at it since the belts goin to be out. i might just stick with the ys1 LS tranny and hope the gm Synchromesh would work. since i really can't afford a tranny after the speeding ticket. thanks for the help! any more comments on what i should do or get?

Yeah, I think that it would save you time/money to just do it all at once. B16 trannies can be had for cheap. Good luck with the swap.
