Default b20 vtec question

Alright guys so i'm looking at buying this built b20 from a nearby shop, I thinking about talking the guy down for sure... Also i the shop owner wants 1500 for a ITR tranny but they are less than 2k new from acura... Do you guys think this setup will do good with boost?

B20Z Block $800
CP pistons 9.8:1 .20 over pistons $650
eagle rods $425
ARP custom headstuds $150
New bearings Main/Rod/Thrust $210
Golden eagle headgasket $100
Golden eagle ls/vtec kit $165
rotating assembly balanced $190
New GSR OEM oil pump $135
New GSR OEM timing belt $65
New GSR OEM waterpump $86
New OEM Oil pan gasket $24
B16 99 Si vtec head $400
Skunk2 new Stg1 cams $500
Machine work $275
Labor assembly $500

$4675 thats what it would cost normal pricing, I am selling it for $3000 complete. Pretty much a new motor with 0 miles.

Also how much would you pay for this setup with ITR, i'm thinking 3500 for both

an entire b20 engine is 500-600
cp pistons can be had for 500
eagle h beams 299

head gasket is a rip at 100, rest is somewhat in line but it's a shitty build if that b20 block is on stock sleeves. the #1 problem with the b20 is sleeve walk and or rod breakage. the eagle rods were smart but you will have a hard time getting someone to pay that for a non sleeved build. if you get more than $1500 i would consider it a really good sale on your part. that engine is a time bomb, it's built with boost compression on a block that can't handle it.

also, itr transmissions range from 800-1200 used for the j4d model. the high mile usdm units normally fetch about 800 with dealer replacement or jdm trannies going closer to 1200

Seriously $1500??? You'd spend over $1000 just to put a stock internal b20 vtec motor together if you buy new gaskets and pumps. And if you couldn't do the internal work yourself, the cost to install those aftermarket parts and put that motor together would be well over $3000

what exactly are you planning on doing to the motor? boosting? n/a set up? If you're going to boost and you pick that up, ask him how much he'll charge you to sleeve the block, if you're going to go with an n/a set up, you'll want to change out those pistons to something with a little higher compression

I plan on boosting it, I already sent him a message asking how much sleeved so we will see what he tells me.

if he'll hook you up with a good price for that motor sleeved i think it would be worth it, is it all a fresh build or is there miles on it?

yeah i think if he'll hook you up to sleeve it, it would be worth it, for all that internal work a shop would charge a grip

if you used the same bore the pistons could be reused with new rings and a new hone. that means $200 for the hone and rings + $1000 for the sleeving. if this was done you would have a 3000+ dollar motor. as it sits it's a time bomb which is why i said it was worth at most $1500 since anyone who bought it would be sleeving it. b20 blocks are just **** to do performance builds with stock. the superior b18c block is already bad enough for a performance build, the b20 is just that much worse. that engine if it was ran like it is and tuned to the 350-400whp level would wind up with a blown head gasket in no time flat from cylinder walk. sleeve it and you have a good engine.

i would think the sleeving is only necessary for boosted set ups, i've seen plenty of people running b20vtec set ups with just arp rod bolts and a fully built head and never had any problems

i think so too, idrivesideways said 3k for it sleeved is a fair price, if you're going to pay 4k for a motor, you can just go k series

and you get the entire car

my whole issue with this engine is the build just was not thought out. it has boost friendly compression pistons and a stock block

just based on the little i know buying the 500whp car is the better bet. reason #1 it runs and hopefully has the issues worked out #2 less labor, you aren't swapping anything #3 you aren't buying a motor that's never fired. if a mistake was made anywhere you would know it quickly with that b20, if so, then what?
