Default b18 engine differences question

First off, yes I've searched.

What are the exact differences between the b18 engines? I have a 2001 Integra GS which I believe has the b18b1 in it. What are mechanical and electronic differeneces between this engine and the vtech (gs-r and type-r) engines? I assume since they are all b18s that the block and bottom end is the same, but what are the real differences.

Is it realistic to convert a b1 to a vtech? Or is there something I'm missing?

PS - any mods feel free to move this if it isn't in the proper forum. I wasn't sure if it should be in the integra forum or one of the technical forums.

I think the difference is in the heads. the vtec and and cams and all that jazz. bottom end on all are 1.8.

Just a quick correct for your bro, its VTEC not vtech, you'll get flamed like crazy if you say that too much.

Yeah, it is worthwhile to convert the b18b to vtec as long as you put the money and work into doing it right.

The difference is the Vtec motors have a higher compression ratio in the head,"b/c that is where the compression take place in jap motors". You can find out the exact stock ratios at JDMdepot.com. Higer cpmpression mean more Horse power. And for the record they are not all 1.8L blocks, the LS has a stock bore of 1.85. every little helps. but to do the swap you schould get the vtec computer to controll the vavles properly. VTEC= (Variable Valve Timing Engine Component). You just learned something.

TTeg95, you need to get your facts straight before you post mis-information.

Please dont listen to what he said.

Head over to team-integra.net and read thier articles, i believe they have a whole load of information about the differences in the motors.

I agree, search for lsvtec ls/vtec ls-vtec and any combo of those. The H-T search does not like words with less than three letters.

B18 bottom ends are not the same, pistons are different, the vtec motors have additional parts, itr is quite different from either even though displacement is the same as the gsr (http://www.team-integra.net/sections...p?ArticleID=35), and even though they are designed as B18, all 3 have different characteristics and the nonvtec b18a and b18b are actually 1.834 L while the GSR/ITR are 1.797 L. (b18a (90-93) and b18b (94-01), b18c1 94-01gsr, b18c5 97-98,00-01 ITR).

where did you come up with that?
VTEC = Variable valve Timing and lift with Electronic Control

VTEC, not

Ok, there are quite a few differences between the different B18 engines.

(90-93 Integra GS, LS, RS)B18A1- 130bhp @ 6000rpm/ 121 lb-ft @ 5000, non-vtec, 1834cc, 9.2:1 compression, 6500 rpm redline

(94-01 Integra GS, LS, RS)B18B1- 142hp @ 6300rpm/127 lbs-ft @ 5200, non-vtec, 1834cc, 9.2:1 compression, 6800 rpm redline

(94-01 Integra GSR)B18C1- 170bhp @ 7600rpm/ 128 lbs-ft @ 6200rpm, VTEC, 1797cc, 10.0:1 compression, 8200 rpm redline

(98 JDM Type R)-B18C (98 Spec R)- 210bhp @ 8100rpm/ 18.5Nm @ 7500rpm, VTEC, 10.0:1 compression, 8900 rpm redline

Yes, it is possible to have VTEC on a B18B1, its called LS/VTEC, please don't post a thread, search, you will find the answers to all your questions, its been gone over so many times.

Let me know if you have any other questions though

also doesn't the B18C1 and B18C5 have an internal oil line for the head in order for VTEC to work while the B18B does not?

I don't know but it makes since, why would the B18B need that when they don't have VTEC. Just do LS/VTEC if you want vtec so bad. I don't get why you guys seem to think its the best feature ever to be put on a production motor, but whatever.

to everyone in this thread that thinks they know what the hell they are talking about..now for the info.

The B18b is a totally different motor than the B18c. First off the block design is entirely different. The b18b uses the standard "Big 3" while the b18c uses the "Big 5", the design for the b18c block is more intended for racing. Honda used the information they had gained from previous motors to design this block, its practically bulletproof in stock form. The only reason the gsr motor is capable of revving to 8200 is because of that measly block girdle. The b18c1 and c5 as well are very different motors. They use the same basic design but the internals are different. The crank is different. ITR head has higher profile cams and a slight port and polish job. The ITR head and B16 head are VERY similar. The ITR motor has a bigger block girdle than the gsr due to its 300 extra rpm revving range. VTEC motors have oil squirters in the block while non-vtec motors do not. The b18b is basically the same thing as the old school ZC motors. All these motors have similarities but they are still very different
