average cost of machining
what is the average cost of machining for a ls block to
1: hone walls just to prepare for new rings and
2: to rebalance the crank to prepare it for new bearings?
3: to shot peen rods?

I was charged 560 to:
Bore
balance crank
resize rods for arp rod bolts
resurface block and head
shot peen rods
assemble bottom
torque down head.
cheap perhaps? my motor doesnt run by the way sooo ya, you get what you pay for. Make sure your machine shop knows wtf they are doing!

call napa and ask them what they charge. around here a bore costs around 150 bucks. and a hone, well, autozone has hones that fit in drills so we just use those and save the loot. as far as rebalancing the crank, i never had to do that before if you had a spun bearing, it might cost about a 100 bucks to get the hot spots cleaned up.
my advice with doing simple b series rebuilds is this: do as little as possible. what do i mean by that? well i mean you don't have to line hone, often don't need to bore, always need to hone and usually should pressure check heads. make sure your bearing clearances are under .0022 or so. most are .0013 to .0018, on the rods same thing but you can max around .0025 and i wouldn't want to be under .0015. PWC is fine if you just do a rehone. shops normally want $50 or so for just a hone and can double check to make sure you're not out of round. always check guides for play and replace valve seals. they are cheap and nearly always shot on high mile B's use OEM rings on OEM pistons and try to stick with OEM bearings unless you machine to get the ACL's clearances correct. keep compression under 12:1 on pump gas and under 11:1 ish to 1 on a factory ecu. going to 11:1 on a gsr is free hp and requires no ecu mods. of course a tune would be more power but we're being cheap here.
BE CAREFUL WITH THE SHOP YOU USE !! waaaaaaaaaaaay too many think tolerances that will work on a 5000rpm 400ci truck motor will be no biggie on a b18c. i had a rebuild fly apart from just this thing when i first did hondas. ask around to see who is building them or do it yourself and follow the rules. like i said above, you often don't need to do a lot. OH, make sure you check the deck of the block for trueness ! they warp, then, when you have it decked make SURE a very fine RA wheel is used, rough cuts WILL leak with MLS gaskets
oh yes and invest in a quality torque wrench and make sure the threads are CLEAN. SK and craftsman and my two favorite low cost units. avoid buying used ones with impact marks of any type. actually, for the $100 either costs just buy new

i got my crank turned for 65 got my rods shot peened for 10 each and i bought a drill honer for 25 and did it myself. they do it by hand at the machine shop anyway so its stupid to have them do it.
