Default Automatic versus Standard

Performace wise how do automatics suffer versus standards? And please could someone give me specific data I.E. stock 0-60 times for the two etc. I Currently drive a '98 integra LS automatic... if someone could give me times for that car specifically and some comparison times say a some year model standard it would be a good help. I am debating whether or not to save up for modifications for my car, and if an automatic is terribly slower than a standard i might just say screw it because integra still look nice stock and i could save for something else. Any help is appreciated thanks.

Ballpark... stock auto has a 0-60 of 2.6-2.5 with powerbraking NOT neutral dropping...... stick can be 2.1 with a good driver and descent tires...

These are estimates..

Auto's are generally 0.5 second slower from 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile as compared to their 5 spd counterparts.

This is about right, I dunno who's misreading what I wrote, I said autos get around 2.5 to about 2.7 0 to 60 FOOT times... I haven't done a damn thing to my tranny..

Vu: No I didn't get a chance yet, waiting for a fuel rail, and bigger injectors and gonna hit up a dyno for serious fuel system tuning before I go again

Okay, so i guess it is possible to make an automatic fast. How much wear on the engine in an automatic happens when you "gun" it. How bout if you shift it is that worse?

Don't downshift your auto.

Theres nothing that can really make your auto fast... getting and upgraded torque converter and tranny pump will help it last longer... dont try shifting the gears yourself... but if you goto the track keep it in d3... you don't wanna hit 4th at the track cause 3rd gear auto is good up to 110mph.

there is nothing wrong with him downshifting and flooring the auto .. its not gonna hurt the tranny .. the ecu has shift points and fuel cutoffs to protect it

and there is a benifit ... if your in the right RPM range/gear.. downshift and floor it ... you get the power at that exact moment .. insted of waiting an extra second for the ECU to downshift for you ...however i have not found a benifit of shifting gears from the line ... i would do what shadowdawn said .. leave it in D3

we have all had this discussion before ... if you know someone's tranny that got screwed .. then the dood was doing neutral drops .. or his auto tranny was fragged .. or on the verge to begin with ... i play with shifting my auto every day for the past 2 years and i drive my honda hard.... no tranny probzz here 129k

Amen to that...... hell I've had a turbo on the car for about 3 months now, been to the track once..... drove at full boost on more then a few occasions and my tranny is perfectly fine... its even holding up to 7lbs of a turbo that flows 850cfm putting probably at least 60hp at the crank more for the tranny to deal with..... I'm not making auto's look like gods, but like the man said people that usualy break their autos bought them used, drive stupid, or n-bombed it......

Interesting, quite interesting...I learned a bit about autos in this thread. I have an auto. I think power braking does help. I did that and it helped launch my car really well. It actually made me spin tires, but just for like 1/2 sec. Anyone been able to chirp gears? I've only done this once while manual shifting up 1-2-d3-d4. Later.

contrary to popular ricer belief, you DO NOT want to chirp gears..it's not "manly" and it doesnt mean you have more power, it usually just means you can't shift.

lol, anyways, one other thing should be noted- launch on "1" instead of "D3". The auto tranny almost "hesitates" when you launch in D3..try it out some time!!

when i had my 15" gsrzz i could chirp droppin, at the right RPM, from 2->1 and chirp again going back from 1->2

i cant chirp **** with my 17z ..then again i got brand new tread too (:

as for 3rd hesitating ?/ hmmm havent noticed it ... but i can tell you .. for example .. just leaving it in D4 ... when you are stopped and in its actually
in 1st gear ... and you take off with it floored...it goes all the way to redline/shiftpoint and shifts gears EXCEPT 3rd->4th soo really i havent seen a benifit with starting out in 1st and manually shifting up

but hey .. ill play with it any way you ask ... just make some recommendations and ill try it ... ill test the 3rd gear in my ride VS 1st .. and tell ya what i get

See. this is the EXACT reason I got screwd on my 1/4 cause I was in D4 and 4rd shifted WAY before redline and I ended a good 100 feet or more of the quarter in 4th gear...... sucked and killed my first times

hehe yea.. well you know why they made it to do that ... shittt i get over 100mph in 3rd.... and most peeps are only gonna be doing the 60-70range on the highway ... so they designed it to shift premature into that last gear ...

im definately gonna have to remember this when i go to the track for times

Expect times from 16.5-17.4 on a stock or slightly modified automatic.
