Default Automatic teggy trouble

my brothers gears on his automatic integra accelerates for a little while but then starts to high rev and lose power in all gears. I know it has a heater problem because the previous owner took the heater hose out and was running okay then. But when I hooked up the heater hose just recently, my coolant reservior loses fluid quick and leaks from underneath the dash board. I'm thinking that it may be the problem bc my temp gauge used to be all the way to hot and might be the thermostat. I was woundering if it the tranny is going bad or the thermostat or anything else? I don't want to spend $800-$900 on parts and labor on a used tranny? and ideas will help thanks
