Personally I see no point because say your going 50ish, you will only be able to get to 4th and 3rd anyways...

I used to shift in my auto Integra , like when I was 16 but I wouldn't, just my $0.02

Another thing, I don't really think it is possible b/c it seems like when you push it, it releases some type of latch...

it is possible to do. but i highly dont recommend this. lets say u doing a high speed and you accidently hit the shifter and it flies into reverse. u gonna be f*cked and wished that u never did it

LOL. Mythbusters tested this. Computer controlled transmissions won't shift into a gear that could cause destruction.

Just jam a key into the slot next to the shifter and see what happens. It should allow the lever to move freely. I'm not sure if that still requires the button.

I think that after a certain speed it doesn't...

In my cousins automatic DC, I was in the back, and this girl threw it in park while at 40ish, it kept rolling and he had to pull over, no noises except a metal clunk noise, but the tranny is still good...

Put somethign into that saftey slot on your/ next o yoru shifter. will allow you to shift without pushing it in, also without havibng key in the ignition...

-- Also it wont go from Drive into reverse while on highway. i tested it out in my old teg. all it does is jerks like you let the clutch fly, but wont engage into reverse.

It depends on the manufacturer. For warranty purposes, it makes sense to restrict the clutch pack engagement with the computer regardless of the shift lever input. Now my 1979 Grand Am would do it.

So you threw it in park with the dyno still spinning and the tires were forced, something I must see, not 1st hand though...

--- Lol, wasn't for you really, but it happened to me. I was actually accelerating while leaning forward reaching for something in passenger side floor, and my massive chest hit the shift up a spot and bang into Reverse @ like 55+. LOLS

Take off the center console/ebrake cover and you'll see how it works. There's a curved metal bracket with little humps in it. The handle pulls up a little arm so it can go over the humps. In some spots it allows you to shift w/out hitting the button. Remove the metal bracket and take it somewhere and have them modify it so it will allow you to shift 1-4 w/out pushing the button but still require you to push the button for neutral, park, and reverse. You don't want to be at WOT and high RPM and then accidentally throw it into neutral.

If you try to force a downshift too far like say all the way to 2nd at 70mph, it will ignore you and not downshift.

On an EG it will allow you to bounce of the rev limiter in first and second but not in any higher gears. BTW, at WOT it's going to go all the way up to the high RPM anyway and the computer will react faster than you ever can. The only benefit to forced shifting is 1) going up or down long hills and 2) engine braking.

The shift release hole is something else btw. There's a solenoid that doesn't allow you to shift if the key isn't in the ignition. Mine went out, but it was $200 for a new one and I didn't have time to go to the junkyard, so I removed it. I forgot about that a long time ago.

FALSE ABOUT GOING FAST AND PUTTING IT IN REVERSE.
i did that on accident, and nothing happened... it kept on rolling foward
i was driving a rental car .. which is auto.. and while going about 50, rolling to a red light, i wanted to move the shifter into neutral, but it went into reverse, car kept rolling. without me going "OMFG !! "

I read this and I had experience with this. I mean alot. Manual shifting and downshifting with auto. if you downshift when going high speeds on the wrong gears like second or third it wont down shift but as soon as it gets to the right speed it will pull down. thats why there is a *shifting solenoid* it controls the fluids inside the tranny and knows when it has to shift. in lower speed when kicked into reverse it will go in and grind or make a clicking noise. at higher speeds. umm never tried only for 2 seconds and shifted off it quick.

alright guys i appreciate all the posts and information given but heres why i really wanna do this
if anyone has read my info i was in a bike accident that broke my neck. long story but im not walking.... broke neck means technical quadriplegic but my arms and hands do infact move
i beefed up my ls and dont wanna push the buttom on the shifter to shift gears.
id like to be able to press the brake and just pull the shifter from park to drive
ive seen on a few automatics shift ***** that have buttons for engagment on the top compared to the stock version that used to be on the side. guessing ill just hafta do that if there is no way to do away with the function.
thanks for all the info

ive got another ecu post info needed
