Default 95 is overheating

95, 2 door 5 speed.
just swapped in a 92-93 motor.
at idle and warmed up the car stays at reg temp, when driven the temp gauge goes up but sometimes if i pop it into neutral it will go down. when driving at a steady speed the gauge goes above red....

i havnt even gotten 100kms on the swap. i refuse to drive it like this.
what im wondering is why the temp gauge is fluctuating. there is no air in the lines, i bled accordingly. fan comes on. why is my coolant boiling!!

i realize it could be the thermostat, but the temp gauge moves up and down (more up, than down).. the rad looks like it was replaced not too to long ago, within 2 years

My Integra had the same problem it would over heat once on for about 10-15min of driving..The needle would just play around hopping from hot to cold within minutes.. But all I did was change the thermostat and it stopped..

sounds like I should change it anyways,

could it be the thermo switch? the one located in the head by the top rad hose?

"both top and bottom radiator hoses are hot that leads me to believe that the water pump is still working ....the heater will eventually blow hot air for only a min or two" - having this problem too

My top radiator hose was always hotter then the bottom one.. And yeah it would spit out from the top hose after the car was driven.. I redid my fluids and changed the thermostat and I havent had the problem since.. Has the radiator ever leaked? Mine was cracked..

well i just changed the thermostat and took it for a drive. sure enough the temp got to the red mark.
i noticed the fan didnt come on when it should have.

during idle before i took the car out, the fan was comming on, but howcome it wont when its over heating?

also its not blowing much heat?
when i come on to it the temp will go down and the heater will get hot, but as soon as im at a steady pace the temp rises, and the heater gets colder?!?!?!

I'd say the temp switch on the thermostat housing is bad. Cuz, this happened on my civic, replaced the switch and it fixed the overheating. I mean you can meter it, if i can remember correctly there should be continuity when the coolant is hot and no continuity when cold. Hope this helps.

could it be the water pump?
seeing how when i accelerate for a short distance it cools down? or would that just mean more air moving through the rad?

still, if i remain at the speed i sped up to, at a constant rpm in say 4th or 5th the temp will go up

Are you positive you filled and bled the system properly then? If it is not blowing warm air through the vents I would be inclined to believe you drained the heater core during the swap. If that's the case it takes a significant amount of coolant to refill the entire system.

Is one rad hose cooler than the other after it has been running for awhile?

i most likely drained the heater core. before i swapped the motor everything was disconnected for a bout 3 weeks.
is there any special way to fill the heater core? or do i just continue to add coolant/antifreeze in through the top of the rad?

anyhow, the lower rad hose is cooler than the top, but then eventually it gets warmer and the thermostat opens (i think)

Also, check the thermostat housing I believe there should be a ground wire bolted there. Just check to make sure it's on good. The problem sounds like an electrical issue. You can try putting 12 volts to the fans directly and see if the run. If they do, then it's gotta be the therno switch or the fan relay.
